Job summary

Surgery Partners Phlebotomist II / Lab Assistant in California performs laboratory procedures in Phlebotomy and other specimen collections under the supervision of a licensed laboratory supervisor. Presents a professional, courteous and respectful demeanor with patients and staff.

Schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM. Certification with AMT, ASCP, NHA, or NPA is required, CPR is required, Phlebotomy Certification within three months of hire, and 2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect patient samples for adult and pediatric patients by venipuncture or finger stick
  • Perform centrifugation, processing, labeling and transport prep of specimens
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality
  • Maintain clean work environment and proper disposal of sharps and waste
  • Perform CLIA waived and some CLIA moderate testing (10%)
  • Record test results accurately and communicate with Lab Manager or Supervisor
  • Provide quality phlebotomy service and positive patient experience at all locations

Job Title: Phlebotomist II / LAB ASSISTANT

Salary Range: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour, based on skill and experience level.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor, the Phlebotomist II performs Laboratory procedures in Phlebotomy and other specimen collections, General Laboratory, Processing, Waived POC testing, and/or any other duties under the direction of a licensed laboratory supervisor. The Phlebotomist II presents a professional, courteous and respectful demeanor when engaging with patients, co-workers, other staff and general public.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
National Health Association (NHA)
National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
CPR required
Issued by (Governing Body) AMT- American Medical Technologist, ASCP - American Society for Clinical Pathology, NCA - National Credentialing Agency, National Health Association (NHA), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA).
Level of Education - High School Diploma or equivalency
Phlebotomy Certification required (within three months of hire date, before preferred)
Field of Study - Phlebotomy
Years of Experience -2 years (preferred)
Describe Type of Experience - Phlebotomy, Point of Care (CLIA Waived testing) preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The Phlebotomist Il is responsible for the collection of patient samples for adult and pediatric patients by vascular access (venipuncture) or capillary collection (finger stick) using aseptic protocols, accurate patient identification and proper labeling procedures (65%)

Perform specimen centrifugation, processing, prepping for transportation, storage and retrieval. Produce patient demographic sheet and prepare additional paperwork, labels, etc. to accompany specimens, as necessary

  1. Able to demonstrate and explain appropriate phlebotomy techniques and procedures in order to obtain corporation and assistance for specimen collection
  2. Employs sound decision making and necessary judgment to assess adverse reactions such as dizziness or other distress and notifies the appropriate clinical staff
  3. Preserves patient confidentiality and ensures HIPAA compliance with all patient related duties
  4. Maintains a clean patient/ working environment while meeting the requirements with all OSHA and regulatory agencies with appropriate use and disposal of sharps, medical/biological waste
  5. Performs CLIA waived and some CLIA moderate testing (10%)
  6. Responsible for the performance of quality control, calibration, and maintenance of the instrumentation that they are trained on

  1. Ensures the accurate recording of test results to ensure quality reporting within the expected time frame
  2. Communicates any questions, unusual findings or observations to the Lab Manager or Supervisor
  3. Works directly with the physicians for the observation and assistance in the bone marrow specimen collection and preparation of samples for testing
  4. Responsible for ensuring patients receive a quality professional phlebotomy service and a pleasant patient experience at all locations in addition to phone interactions (20%)
  5. Responsible for interacting with patients professionally and courteously utilizing positive patient experience tools
  6. Monitors phone and voice mail messages, as necessary
  7. Utilize skills to accurately access patient/testing information and communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff
  8. Appropriately maintains inventory of supplies and materials within the department
  9. RL6 investigation and support. (5%)
  10. Effectively reports and investigates patient safety incidents, medical errors and potential risks in the facility
  11. Assists with identification and implementation of corrective action where appropriate
  12. Responsible for investigating issues such as turn-around-times with the lab, problems receiving supplies, patient issues and concerns, and will be responsible for forwarding these issues to the correct leadership
