Job summary

The Cancer & Hematology Centers is seeking a dedicated phlebotomy technician to join our clinical laboratory team. You will perform venipunctures and finger sticks, identify patients accurately, and label and handle specimens in accordance with policy.

You will manage tube selection, monitor supplies, enter new patients into the LIS, and print and fax reports. You will support the medical technologists and help maintain a safe, clean lab while handling additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Perform venipunctures and finger sticks according to written policies and procedures.
• Identify patients accurately and label and handle specimens.
• Determine and draw the proper collection tubes for tests requested.
• Monitor phlebotomy supplies and notify manager when replenishing needed.
• Enter new patients into the LIS and properly order tests; designate send-out tests and print/fax reports.

• Maintain a safe working environment by following safety policies and keeping the phlebotomy area clean and stocked.
• Assist the medical technologist with tasks such as answering the phone, balancing lab billing, and coordinating patient care.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for performing venipunctures and finger sticks in accordance with written policies and procedures.
• Responsible for accurately identifying patients and properly labeling and handling specimens.
• Determines and draws the proper collection tubes for tests requested.
• Responsible for monitoring phlebotomy supplies and notifying manager when replenishing needed.
• Able to correctly enter new patients into the laboratory information system and properly order tests on existing patients. Designate in system where send out tests are sent. Able to print and fax reports through system.
• Maintain a safe working environment by strict adherence to company safety policies and procedures. Is alert to the existence of safety hazards and reports any unsafe conditions to the safety officer. Keeps phlebotomy area clean and well stocked.
• Able to assist the medical technologist with a variety of tasks when applicable such as answering the phone, balancing lab billing, ordering send out tests, coordinating patient care with the physicians and nurses, helping with blood product distribution and assisting with bone marrow biopsies.
• All other duties as assigned.
