Position Summary:

The Phlebotomist for the Lead Poisoning Program is responsible for conducting phlebotomy services for known and suspected cases of lead exposure in children aged six and under, as well as pregnant women. In addition to performing blood draws and processing samples, this role serves as the Lead Testing Coordinator, with the goal of enhancing program involvement and ensure effective communication and collaboration to promote lead testing initiatives.

Day in the life: As a Phlebotomist II for the Lead Poisoning Program, the day typically begins with preparing for community outreach events at local schools and childcare facilities, where the importance of lead testing will be communicated. After gathering necessary supplies for blood draws, the phlebotomist travels to various sites, conducting capillary and venous blood draws on young children and pregnant women to assess potential lead exposure. In addition to performing these critical medical procedures, the phlebotomist also serves as the Lead Testing Coordinator, enhancing program involvement by collaborating with educational institutions and engaging with families to share information about lead poisoning prevention. Throughout the day, meticulous record-keeping and data collection inform public health strategies, ensuring that the program effectively addresses lead exposure risks within the community

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (other duties may be assigned):

  • Enhance Involvement in lead poisoning programs by recruiting schools and childcare facilities for lead testing
  • Serve as the coordinator for testing events
  • Act as the primary engagement contact for educational institutions and present on the importance of lead testing
  • Perform capillary and venous blood draws to assess potential lead exposure in children and pregnant women
  • Execute blood lead testing in schools, childcare facilities, clinics, homes, outreach events
  • Assist with data collection for lead survey areas to inform public health strategies

Community Education and Outreach (29%)

  • Conduct and participate in periodic surveys and targeted outreach events to evaluate neighborhood environmental health status
  • Provide residents with information about lead poisoning and its prevention

Emergency Preparedness (1%)

  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and responses as directed

Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certifications/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-based applications.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Ability to adapt daily work plans as priorities change.
  • Effective coordination with internal staff and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in performing capillary and venous blood draws on young children.
  • This position requires frequent local travel and a significant amount of time spent outside of the office.
  • Professional settings include healthcare facilities, childcare centers, and educational institutions throughout the county.
  • Office duties involve extended periods of sitting, computer screen usage, and repetitive hand movements
