About the unit

Inpatient Phlebotomy is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients using safe and hygienic techniques. After drawing blood, phlebotomists label and deliver samples to the laboratory for testing. They maintain accurate records and coordinate with healthcare staff to ensure seamless patient care. This role is crucial for accurate diagnostics, health monitoring, and treatment planning.

Scope of work

Under moderate direction, collects and documents patient specimens to ensure accurate Clinical Laboratory testing. Maintains storeroom, equipment, and inventory.

The following responsibilities reflect major duties but are not exhaustive:

  1. Follows all established procedures for specimen collection to ensure accurate testing results. Identifies patients according to procedure 100% of the time. Collects appropriate specimens and volumes.
  2. Maintains technical and organizational skills to meet time commitments and ensure staff and patient safety.
  3. Attends staff in-service meetings, committee meetings, or training sessions as necessary. Completes all competency modules by required due date.
  4. Follows all safety procedures, including universal precautions.
  5. Skilled in all collection procedures (blood cultures, bleeding times, etc.).
  6. Provides accurate documentation for all patient collections or reasons for non-completion. Documents floor assignments, pager assignments, rest periods, and lunch breaks. Verifies specimens via computer documentation.
  7. Participates in the orientation of new employees.
  8. Demonstrates positive interactions with hospital staff. Responds to requests for lab results and specimen collection in a polite and timely manner.
  9. Assists in meeting lab TAT goals through timely collection, verification, processing, and delivery of specimens.
  10. Maintains equipment, inventory, and storeroom to ensure productivity. Notifies supervisor of low inventory. Keeps collection storeroom, laboratory, and trays neat and organized.

Pay Range

Starting at $15.00 per hour.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited 6-month+ phlebotomy training program OR at least 6 months of phlebotomy experience
  • Preferred: Minimum 6 months phlebotomy experience
