The Philanthropy Associate II plays a key role in advancing board engagement and fundraising effectiveness across the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Reporting to the Director of Board Relations, this position works at the intersection of Board Relations and frontline fundraising to translate engagement and fundraising strategies into coordinated, well-executed action and strengthen the team's capacity to provide consistent, individualized engagement of board members.

The Philanthropy Associate II partners closely with Board Relations, frontline gift officers, philanthropy operations colleagues, institutional leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen board member engagement, support relationship, and fundraising strategies, and ensure timely follow-through on key activities. A central focus of the role is helping coordinate individualized board member engagement planning and reporting that helps gift officers and Board Relations identify opportunities to deepen involvement and philanthropic support and ensure those opportunities are effectively advanced.

Operating within established policies and procedures, the Philanthropy Associate II exercises initiative, discretion, and sound judgment in managing assigned responsibilities, resolving routine and non-routine issues, and ensuring the accuracy and confidentiality of donor information. The position contributes to the successful implementation of philanthropy programs by supporting organizational goals, maintaining compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements, and helping create a positive and responsive board member and donor experience.

As an integral member of the philanthropy team, the Philanthropy Associate II supports the mission of Maryland Medicine by providing high-quality administrative and operational support that strengthens Board Relations capacity and advances fundraising effectiveness, board member and donor engagement, and institutional priorities.

Primary Duties
  • Supports individualized board member engagement strategies, including meeting preparation, documentation, and follow-up to help ensure consistent and meaningful engagement.
  • Maintains board engagement tracking and monitors action items and timelines to advance engagement and fundraising activities and ensure timely follow-through.
  • Supports frontline gift officers with board members and board-connected prospects through meeting preparation, reporting, coordination, and follow-up.
  • Prepares reports on board giving, participation, and fundraising activity to inform individualized board member outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Supports board working group and committee activity through meeting logistics, materials, documentation, and action-item follow-up.
  • Supports mission-focused board communications and engagement activities in partnership with Board Relations and frontline gift officers.
  • Tracks board-related prospects, relationships, outreach, and next steps and proactively prompts team members on action items to maintain momentum on engagement and fundraising strategies.
  • Maintains board engagement and participation information to support board and term reviews and identify opportunities for deeper engagement.
  • Supports additional fundraising, stewardship, donor engagement, events, reporting, and philanthropy activities as needed.
  • Collaborates across the philanthropy enterprise, safeguards confidential information, and adheres to institutional policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Due to the nature of fundraising and alumni relations, all employees share responsibility for maintaining appropriate office and telephone coverage.
Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of fundraising, philanthropy, or client/customer relations experience.
  • Experience working in higher education, healthcare, or nonprofit fundraising and understanding of best practices in major gifts fundraising and donor stewardship preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and donor database systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge, Salesforce, or similar). Familiarity with donor reporting techniques preferred.
  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the job may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Hiring Range: $54,000 - $60,000, Commensurate with education and experience
