Position Summary

The Associate Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating,soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and prospects capableof making major gifts of $100,000 or more in support of theUniversity of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University ofMaryland Medical Center (UMMC). Reporting to the Senior Director ofDevelopment, Medical Education and Alumni Philanthropy, thisposition develops and executes strategic fundraising plans designedto secure philanthropic support for institutional priorities,academic programs, research initiatives, patient care,scholarships, faculty support, and other mission-drivenopportunities.

A key focus of the position will be building and expanding a comprehensive philanthropy program for residency and fellowship alumni across UMSOM and UMMC, with a concentration on Emergency Medicine.

Working in concert with other team members focused onresidency and fellowship alumni, the Associate Director willdevelop scalable strategies to identify, engage, cultivate, andsolicit this important constituency while building a model that canbe expanded across departments and programs.

The Associate Director manages a portfolio of major gift prospectsand donors and is accountable for achieving annual fundraisinggoals and performance metrics, including dollars raised, portfolioactivity, proposal development, and substantive donor engagement.Through effective relationship management, the Associate Directorevaluates donor interests and philanthropic capacity, developscultivation and solicitation strategies, and guides prospectsthrough the donor lifecycle to maximize philanthropic investmentand long-term engagement.

Working collaboratively with faculty, department leaders,volunteers, and philanthropy colleagues, the Associate Directorrepresentsss the institution to alumni, grateful patients, friends,foundations, and community partners. The position serves as atrusted advisor to donors and institutional stakeholders, helpingalign philanthropic interests with strategic priorities whileensuring an exceptional donor experience.

The Associate Director operates with a high degree of independenceand professional judgment, applying specialized fundraisingknowledge and best practices to develop innovative solutions,resolve complex issues, and advance fundraising objectives. Theposition contributes to the development and implementation offundraising strategies, policies, and operational practices thatsupport effective, compliant, and donor-centered philanthropyprograms.

In addition to managing a personal portfolio, the AssociateDirector collaborates across development functions including annualgiving, stewardship, prospect management, donor relations,communications, and special events to support integratedfundraising efforts and achieve organizational goals. The positionmay provide guidance, mentorship, or training to colleagues andserves as an ambassador for the mission and values of MarylandMedicine.

Essential Functions:

• Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 75–100 major andprincipal gift prospects and donors capableof making gifts of$100,000 or more, leading cultivation, solicitation, andstewardship activities.
• Develop and execute strategies to build a robust pipeline ofresidency and fellowship alumni across UMSOM and UMMC, with a focuson Emergency Medicine, creating approaches that can be scaledacross additional departments and programs.
• Partner closely with Emergency Medicine leadership, faculty,residency and fellowship program leaders, and alumni to strengthenengagement, identify philanthropic opportunities, and buildlong-term relationships with former residents andfellows.
• Work collaboratively with the Senior Director ofDevelopment, Medical Education and Alumni Philanthropy and fellowresidency, fellowship, and other alumni-focused team members todevelop a coordinated, enterprise-wide approach to engaging thisconstituency.
• Establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals,participation metrics, donor retention goals, and strategicfundraising plans.
• Develop innovative donor pipeline strategies that move alumni,residents, fellows, grateful patients, and friends from engagementto philanthropy through coordinated annual, major, planned, andprincipal gift efforts.
• Utilize data analytics, prospect research, and fundraisingperformance metrics to identify opportunities for growth andcontinuous improvement.
• Partner with leadership, alumni boards, residency andfellowship alumni groups, and physician volunteer leaders tostrengthen engagement, philanthropy, advocacy, and volunteerparticipation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor's degree required

Experience:

Four (4) years of progressive fundraisingexperience and one (1) year of managing major gift prospects inacademic medicine, higher education, healthcare, or a similarlycomplex organization.

Except for qualifications established by law,additional related experience and formal education in which one hasgained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for fullperformance of the work of the job class may be substituted for theeducation or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year ofrelated experience. In instances where specific education and/orexperience is required only directly related education and/orexperience may be substituted.

• Demonstrated success securing major gifts.
• Experience developing alumni, constituency-based, orpipeline-building fundraising programs preferred.
• Knowledge of medical education, physician training,residency and fellowship programs, Graduate Medical Education(GME), and academic medicine environments preferred.
• Strong understanding of major gifts, annual giving, plannedgiving, stewardship, and prospect management.
• Demonstrated ability to build productive partnerships withacademic leadership, medical education offices, faculty, andhealthcare executives.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building, presentation,and strategic planning skills.
• Ability to travel regionally and nationally as required.

Hiring Range:

$92,000 - $100,000, Commensurate witheducation and experience
