Job summary

Vylor is seeking a Phenotyping Specialist at our Johnston, IA site to advance crop science through hands-on field and laboratory work. You will operate research equipment, participate in multicrop projects, and contribute to seed production activities across diverse programs.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a scientific field and strong data handling, communication, and teamwork skills. Occasional weekend work and overtime occur during peak periods.

  • Experience in Agronomy, Biology, Plant Breeding or related field preferred.
  • Strong data handling and software literacy required.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of multicrop/multifunction team across SPD, Biotech, and other functional accountability.
  • Operate research equipment for planting and harvest.
  • Lead 2nd shift sortation during seed filling (3PM–11PM) for 4–6 weeks.
  • Scout fields for agronomy pests and diseases with strong knowledge.
  • Coordinate regional scouting with team members and stakeholders.
  • Support research center projects and seed production activities, including seed prep and sampling.
  • Overtime and weekend work required during peak periods.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Phenotyping Specialist at our Johnston IA location.

Responsibilities – What You’ll Do
  • Participate as a multicrop/multifunction team member for all SPD, Biotech, and other functional accountability. Detailed in Corn, Soy, Wheat, Cropping Systems,etc…
  • Operator research equipment for planting and harvest.
  • Will Lead 2nd shift sortation efforts (3PM - 11 PM) during seed filling in spring - This is a 4-to-6-week assignment end of March to first of May - Will consist of managing up to 10 seasonal employees
  • Highly desired and strong knowledge around research ag equipment.
  • Able to scout fields, focusing on agronomy pests and diseases.
  • Able to work with team members in driving regional scouting teams.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with all team members/stakeholders to understand both agronomic deadlines and other functional groups deadlines.
  • Work across Johnston team functions to support other activities at the site/along with support of other assigned research projects.
  • Assist with research center projects and research seed production activities, including seed preparation for planting, winter nursery deadlines, seed sampling, and other overall support for the research center to be successful. These are critical times for the success of the research program, so weekend work and overtime will be required during peak periods.
  • Willingness to manage and direct the work of temporary and seasonal employees.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and respectful work environment.
Qualifications – What You’ll Bring

Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in agriculture or scientific field. Experience in Agronomy, Biology, Plant Breeding, or a scientific‑related field preferred.

  • Technologically Savvy: Competency with standard Microsoft Office programs and capacity to learn new technologies and software. Handling of large volumes of data will be required.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
  • Results Driven: Self‑motivated and ability to initiate projects, improvements, decisions, and problem solving. Detail‑oriented, strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Safety Oriented: Commitment to excellent safety and risk management practices.
Physical Requirements – What You Will Need
  • Must be capable of lifting 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in varying environmental and ergonomic conditions including field work, etc.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule including overtime hours including weekend work required during seasonal peaks and shift work if needed/applicable.
  • Able to stay overnight during peak periods.
  • Driver’s License, acceptable driving record, CMV (pulling pickup bumper hitch/gooseneck trailers)
