Job summary

Eurofins USA PSS Insourcing Solutions seeks a Fermentation Process Development Engineer (PhD level) to lead upstream development of E. coli fermentation at bench to pilot scales. The role collaborates with molecular biology, analytics, and QA to deliver robust processes and GLP-ready documentation.

On-site at San Carlos, CA with transfer plans to South San Francisco by 2027. Applicants should hold a PhD in a related field and have hands-on microbial scale-up, DOE experience, and strong writing

Qualifications

• PhD in chemical engineering or related field required.
• Hands-on scaling of microbial processes from bench to pilot/manufacturing scale.
• Experience applying DOE and statistics to process development.
• Strong technical writing and documentation experience.
• BSL-1 containment work with GM E. coli and safe lab operations.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute, and optimize E. coli fermentation from shake flasks to bench- and pilot-scale bioreactors.
• Improve yield and batch consistency via media, feed, induction, and control setpoints.
• Define process design space with DOE; identify critical parameters.
• Establish scale-independent criteria for transfer to external partners.
• Prepare development reports, protocols, and GLP-ready documentation.
• Collaborate with molecular biology, downstream purification, analytics, and QA.
• Lead investigations to identify root causes and corrective actions.
