Job summary

The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Inc. is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician II to support safe, timely pharmacy services.

You will prepare, package, label, and distribute unit-dose medications, deliver to care areas, and maintain inventory under supervision. Clinical oversight by staff pharmacist ensures adherence to state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

Job Summary

Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, the Certified Pharmacy Technician II supports safe, timely pharmacy services by performing technical and operational duties in accordance with established policies and applicable state and federal regulations. Responsibilities include preparing, packaging, labeling, and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders; delivering medications and supplies to patient care areas; and maintaining medication integrity through proper storage, rotation, and inventory control. The technician uses pharmacy information systems and departmental tools to document work, support workflow tracking and reporting as assigned, and may be scheduled in central pharmacy and/or specialized pharmacy areas based on operational needs. The role also includes organizing inventory, auditing medication storage areas, conducting safety and quality checks, escalating discrepancies, and handling controlled substances per policy. The technician may assist with onboarding and technical training and participate in departmental projects and quality/safety initiatives as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices.
  • Support the operations of the pharmacy and ensure the safe and efficient delivery of medications and healthcare products.
  • Utilize area‑specific technology, including but not limited to robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
  • Audit medication storage areas utilizing data collection tools (if applicable).
  • Handle and prepare all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assist with the training of junior pharmacy technicians and pharmacy technician trainees.
  • Understand the complex medication needs of patients and coordinate with pharmacy and medical/nursing staff to meet those needs while providing extraordinary service (if applicable).
  • Assist with the organization of the pharmacy's inventory and operational workflow.
  • Assist with preparing daily work reports, conducting safety and quality assurance audits, and participating in inventory management and control (if applicable).

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification [CPhT] - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required
Experience
  • Pharmacy technician 0-1 year required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow verbal and written instructions, including department policies and procedures
  • Understand HIPAA privacy rules and will use discretion handling patient related information
  • Ability to adhere to safety requirements for handling non‑hazardous and hazardous medications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements
  • Proficient with math calculations associated with assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment
  • Ability to work with sustained attention and care on routine, repetitive tasks
  • Knowledge and ability to handle controlled substances in accordance with state regulations
  • Multi task and prioritize tasks under time constraints. Organize and maintain efficient work areas
  • Command of area‑specific technology, including, but not limited to , robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems
