Job summary

Mass General Brigham's Newton-Wellesley Hospital seeks a Certified Pharmacy Technician II to support safe, timely pharmacy services by preparing, packaging, labeling, and distributing unit-dose medications and outpatient prescriptions, and delivering medications to patient care areas.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Pharmacy Technician [State License] required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification [CPhT] - PTCB required.
  • Pharmacy technician 0-1 year required.
  • HIPAA privacy rules knowledge.
  • Ability to perform math calculations accurately.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures

Responsibilities

  • Follow policies and procedures to perform routine pharmacy support tasks.

  • Assist training of junior technicians and trainees.
  • Coordinate with staff to meet patient medication needs and provide service.
  • Prepare daily work reports and participate in inventory management

Job Summary

Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, the Certified Pharmacy Technician II supports safe, timely pharmacy services by performing technical and operational duties in accordance with established policies and applicable state and federal regulations. Responsibilities include preparing, packaging, labeling, and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders; delivering medications and supplies to patient care areas; and maintaining medication integrity through proper storage, rotation, and inventory control. The technician uses pharmacy information systems and departmental tools to document work, support workflow tracking and reporting as assigned, and may be scheduled in central pharmacy and/or specialized pharmacy areas based on operational needs. The role also includes organizing inventory, auditing medication storage areas, conducting safety and quality checks, escalating discrepancies, handling controlled substances in accordance with policy, assisting with onboarding and technical training, and participating in departmental projects and quality and safety initiatives as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department
  • Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices
  • Responsible for supporting the operations of the pharmacy and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of medications and healthcare products
  • Utilizes area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems
  • Responsible for supporting the operations of the pharmacy and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of medications and healthcare products
  • Audit medication storage areas utilizing data collection tools (if applicable)
  • Handle and prepare all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Responsible for assisting with the training of junior pharmacy technician and trainee team members
  • Understand the complex medication needs of patients and coordinate with pharmacy and medical/nursing staff to meet those needs while providing extraordinary service (if applicable)
  • Assist with the organization of the pharmacy's inventory and operational flow
  • Assist with preparing daily work reports, conduct safety and quality assurance audits and participate in inventory management and control (if applicable)
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • - Ability to read, interpret, and follow verbal and written instructions, including department policies and procedures
  • - Understand HIPAA privacy rules and will use discretion handling patient related information
  • - Ability to adhere to safety requirements for handling non-hazardous and hazardous medications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements
  • - Proficient with math calculations associated with assigned responsibilities
  • - Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment
  • - Ability to work with sustained attention and care on routine, repetitive tasks
  • - Knowledge and ability to handle controlled substances in accordance with state regulations
  • - Multi task and prioritize tasks under time constraints. Organize and maintain efficient work areas
