Purpose
The Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by showing proficiency in essential technician functions such as sterile and non‑sterile medication preparation, packaging and labeling of medications, medication filling, and medication distribution. These services are performed in compliance with the Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
Responsibilities
- Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices.
- Assist in the preparation of oral, injectable, intravenous admixtures and TPN for the appropriate patient at the correct time.
- Use proper technique in the preparation of medications.
- Maintain the ability to work in the Sterile Product area, preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs using propers aseptic technique.
- Participate in the distribution of medication, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and the delivery of controlled substances in compliance with departmental policy and state and federal requirements.
- Retrieve dispensed medications that have been discontinued and return (and credit if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.
- Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during the distribution process.
- Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
- Provide and receive information (via telephone, person‑to‑person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors.
- Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
- Ensure that all medications in all areas are safely and securely stored according to regulations.
- Comply with federal and state obligations such as HIPAA, OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements.
- Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
- Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
- Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required.
- Maintain all pertinent documentation mandatory logs.
- Finalize sales using the cash register, following proper cash‑handling procedures.
- Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on a daily basis in applicable areas.
- Maintain and update automated med stations, unit and departmental stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
- Demonstrate a high level of accuracy and skill in maintaining controlled substance records and distribution.
- Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances.
- Assure compliance with mandatory regulations in the handling of controlled substances.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement activities to improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care.

Qualifications
- Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.
- OR completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program and two years of pharmacy technician experience.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- PA State Board of Pharmacy registration mandatory for all PA locations. Pharmacy interns must not register unless specified.
- PA Pharmacy Tech Registration.
- Act 34 compliance.
