UPMC Community Pharmacy is looking for a full‑time Pharmacy Technician Intermediate to join our team at Hillman Outpatient Pharmacy. The position involves providing pharmaceutical care within the UPMC Health System, including sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, packaging, labeling, filling, and distribution. The role follows the regulations of the Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and the State Board of Pharmacy.
The Pharmacy Technician Intermediate will work rotating daylight shifts Monday through Friday and rotating Saturday shifts.
Responsibilities
- Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices, including initial and dating products as required.
- Prepare oral, injectable, and intravenous medications, such as TPN, for patient administration and use proper technique.
- Work in the sterile product area, preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs with aseptic technique.
- Participate in medication distribution, including medication cassettes, emergency carts, and delivery of controlled substances per policy and federal/state requirements.
- Retrieve discontinued medications and return or credit them to the appropriate pharmacy area.
- Develop and maintain positive service relationships during medication distribution.
- Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
- Provide information to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors via telephone, in person, or written; refer drug‑information questions to staff pharmacists.
- Ensure medications are safely stored according to Dept. of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board regulations and comply with HIPAA, OSHA, FWA, and CMS.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
- Use computer skills to process and maintain patient information and records, and to maintain the pharmacy computer system.
- Maintain all documentation such as eye‑wash logs, refrigerator logs, and perpetual inventory logs.
- Finalize sales using the cash register and follow proper cash‑handling policies.
- Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels daily in medication stock rooms, automated carousels, and dispensing machines.
- Maintain and update automated medication stations, units, and emergency boxes.
- Demonstrate accuracy and skill in maintaining controlled‑substance records and distribution processes.
- Audit and maintain accurate controlled‑substance records, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Department regulations.
- Participate in departmental quality‑improvement activities to continually improve pharmaceutical care.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, or completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program.
- Two years of pharmacy technician experience.
- PA State Board of Pharmacy registration is required for all PA locations.
