Job summary

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, manage, and remove expired or recalled medications across pharmacy, patient care, procedural, and off-site areas
  • Prepare, label, dispense, and deliver medications (sterile and non-sterile) under pharmacist supervision, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Compound IV admixtures and specialty products using proper aseptic technique and required calculations
  • Repackage, label, and handle medications—including controlled substances—while completing all required documentation
  • Stock, refill, and maintain automated dispensing cabinets and medication inventories to support patient care needs
  • Deliver medications to patient care units and manage transfers or returns as needed
  • Provide leadership by training and mentoring pharmacy technicians and students; ensure competencies and training documentation are completed
  • Support daily pharmacy operations by assisting customers, managing communication systems, and using pharmacy technology and equipment
  • Promote quality, safety, and efficiency through performance improvement initiatives, special projects, and workflow optimization
  • Serve as a role model and team leader by demonstrating professionalism, flexibility, collaboration, and commitment to UPMC's mission and values
Qualifications
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
  • Minimum of three years health-system pharmacy experience and fully trained in health-system pharmacy within six months of hire.
  • Must take a written test during interview process and annually and must achieve a score of 85% in health system pharmacy.
