Job summary

RxPartners, part of the UPMC Health System, seeks a full-time Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate, to support sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, labeling, packaging, and distribution in a hospital setting.

The role involves a Monday through Friday 2:30pm–11pm schedule with occasional weekend/holiday shifts and requires PA State Board registration (or equivalent) and at least two years of technician experience. Safety and compliance are emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program is required.
  • Two years of Pharmacy Technician experience are preferred.
  • PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locations; Pharmacy Intern license holders may not need registration.
  • Driver's License and Automotive Insurance are required.
  • Act 34 clearance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in filling medication orders with correct labeling, counting, and stocking; initial and date products as required.
  • Prepare oral and injectable medications, including IV admixtures and TPN, for the correct patient.
  • Work in sterile products area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs using aseptic technique.
  • Distribute medications via cassettes, carts, and automated dispensing systems in compliance with all regulations.
  • Maintain and update medication storage, inventory, and documentation; operate pharmacy computer systems.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and all applicable laws and policies.
  • Provide information to hospital staff, patients, and visitors and refer drug information questions to a Staff Pharmacist.
  • Audit controlled substances records and participate in quality improvement activities.

Job description

RxPartners is seeking a Full Time Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate to join their team!

This Full Time position will work Monday thru Friday 2:30pm-11pm with occasional weekend and holiday shifts.

The Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by demonstrating proficiency in essential technician functions, including sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, packaging and labeling of medications, medication filling, and medication distribution. Services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of oral and injectable medications, including intravenous admixtures and Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), for the correct patient and administration at the appropriate time using proper preparation techniques.
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to work in the sterile products area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs, including chemotherapy, using proper aseptic technique.
  • Participate in the distribution of medications, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and controlled substances in accordance with department policy and state and federal requirements.
  • Retrieve discontinued medications and return them, including processing credits when necessary, to the appropriate pharmacy area.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships throughout the medication distribution process.
  • Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
  • Provide and receive information via telephone, written communication, and face-to-face interactions with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to a Staff Pharmacist.
  • Ensure medications are stored safely and securely in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, State Board of Pharmacy regulations, and applicable federal and state laws, including HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA) requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
  • Utilize pharmacy computer systems to process and maintain patient information and records.
  • Maintain required documentation, including eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs, and other operational records.
  • Finalize sales using a cash register and follow established cash-handling policies and procedures.
  • Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels in pharmacy stockrooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.
  • Maintain and update automated medication stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
  • Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in maintaining controlled substance records and supporting the distribution process for controlled substances.
  • Audit and maintain accurate controlled substance records and ensure storage and dispensing practices comply with all federal, state, and departmental regulations.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement activities designed to continually evaluate and improve pharmaceutical care and operational performance.
Qualifications
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent OR Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program and Two years of Pharmacy Technician experience.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locations. If an individual has a Pharmacy Intern license, they do not need to register with the State of PA.
