  • Distribute medications in accordance with department policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain documentation and ensure safe storage of medications and records.

RxPartners is seeking a Casual Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate to join their team!

This is a casual position that provides coverage support as needed. The schedule may include day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts based on departmental staffing needs.

The Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by demonstrating proficiency in essential technician functions, including sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, packaging and labeling of medications, medication filling, and medication distribution. Services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of oral and injectable medications, including intravenous admixtures and Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), for the correct patient and administration at the appropriate time using proper preparation techniques.
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to work in the sterile products area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs, including chemotherapy, using proper aseptic technique.
  • Participate in the distribution of medications, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and controlled substances in accordance with department policy and state and federal requirements.
  • Retrieve discontinued medications and return them, including processing credits when necessary, to the appropriate pharmacy area.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships throughout the medication distribution process.
  • Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
  • Provide and receive information via telephone, written communication, and face-to-face interactions with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to a Staff Pharmacist.
  • Ensure medications are stored safely and securely in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, State Board of Pharmacy regulations, and applicable federal and state laws, including HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA) requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
  • Utilize pharmacy computer systems to process and maintain patient information and records.
  • Maintain required documentation, including eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs, and other operational records.
  • Finalize sales using a cash register and follow established cash-handling policies and procedures.
  • Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels in pharmacy stockrooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.
  • Maintain and update automated medication stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
  • Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in maintaining controlled substance records and supporting the distribution process for controlled substances.
  • Audit and maintain accurate controlled substance records and ensure storage and dispensing practices comply with all federal, state, and departmental regulations.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement activities designed to continually evaluate and improve pharmaceutical care and operational performance.
