MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Technician III to join the Inpatient Pharmacy team. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, you will prepare and fill routine orders, restock automated dispensing machines, and assist with sterile and non-sterile compounding.

You will perform advanced technical duties to support pharmacy operations, including IV admixture, medication labeling, inventory management, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician Training Program required.
  • Maryland Board of Pharmacy registration/tech license required upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and fill routine medication orders under pharmacist supervision.
  • Restock automated dispensing machines and inventory.
  • Assist with sterile and non-sterile compounding and IV admixture.
  • Label, package, and dispense medications accurately.
  • Maintain medication storage and safety in the hospital.

Job description

The Inpatient Pharmacy team at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is hiring for a Full Time Pharmacy Technician III.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; and compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications. Performs designated advanced level technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Consistently fulfills all the duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician II with progression.
  • Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral, topical and all parenteral medications for dispensing to patients including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals using appropriate IV equipment and filling of medication carts.
  • Performs higher level duties as needed by the department including but not limited to: controlled substance monitoring, process improvement, and procedure development procurement discrepancy resolution and report generation inventory management. Training of new associates within the department is required.
  • Abides by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles including lookalike sound alike and high alert drugs.
  • Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information as appropriate for safe medication management.
  • Ensures that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital. Stores medications under conditions necessary to ensure stability.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identifies areas to improve safety.
  • Preparation: Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the most ready to administer form (including hazardous medications and sterile products) using proper techniques, calculations and appropriate precautions.
  • Stores controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Transports medication to patient care units placing in the designated delivery locations within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program required
  • AA/BS or some college credits in Natural or Physical sciences and/or Business Management preferred
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience
Experience
  • 3-4 years Hospital Pharmacy Technician Experience required
  • 1-2 years IV Admixture and Pharmacy Automation Experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • PHRMTECH-R -Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
  • National pharmacy technician license such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career Association (NHA) certification required upon hire
