Under the supervision of a pharmacist, performs hazardous and nonhazardous sterile compounding, nonsterile compounding, delivers medications, and is responsible for refilling and loading medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs). Performs other medication-related tasks such as packaging, preparation of oral and IV medications, record keeping, and all aspects of their distribution. Assists in transportation and handling of controlled substances and documentation related to their delivery.

Maintains 50% of time performing sterile compounding activities and/or specialized tasks, including addressing MAR messages, code cart management, controlled substance receiving/reconciliation, and medication ordering.

Major Responsibilities

  • Prepares intravenous (IV) drugs using aseptic technique, including compounding parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other IV drugs.
  • Maintains documentation per regulatory and hospital standards, respecting patient confidentiality, and generates pharmacy reports.
  • Performs all responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal standards for medication compounding.
  • Prepares sterile parenteral products based on patient orders, including additive, volume, and concentration; prepares adult, pediatric, neonatal parenteral nutrition.
  • Prepares batch sterile compounded products for high-use items.
  • Maintains inventory and supplies for sterile compounding and orders supplies as needed.
  • Maintains certification standards in aseptic technique.
  • Proficient with pharmacy technology and equipment, including compounding systems.
  • Documents compounded products using systems like Simplify, Epic, IMS, etc.
  • Supports training of new technicians in sterile compounding and other tasks.
  • Performs monthly air and surface sampling, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates proper behavior in ISO environments (handwashing, garbing, aseptic technique).
  • Monitors and documents temperature, humidity, and pressure in relevant areas.
  • Uses and maintains primary engineering controls properly.
  • Inspects areas, removes outdated medications and supplies, and assists with annual inventory.
