Under the supervision of a pharmacist, performs hazardous and nonhazardous sterile compounding, nonsterile compounding, medication delivery, and is responsible for refilling and loading medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs). Performs other medication-related tasks such as packaging, preparation of oral and IV medications, record keeping, and handling controlled substances with proper documentation.

Maintains 50% of time performing sterile compounding activities and/or specialized tasks, including MAR message management, code cart management, controlled substance reconciliation, and medication ordering.

Major Responsibilities
  • Prepares IV drugs using aseptic technique, including parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other IV drugs.
  • Maintains documentation per regulatory and hospital requirements, respecting patient confidentiality, and generates pharmacy reports.
  • Performs all major responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Complies with all standards for medication compounding.
  • Prepares sterile parenteral products from patient orders, including adult, pediatric, neonatal nutrition.
  • Prepares batch sterile compounded products for high-use items.
  • Maintains inventory and supplies for sterile compounding and orders supplies for the IV area.
  • Maintains certification standards in aseptic technique.
  • Proficient with pharmacy technology and equipment, and proper use of compounding systems.
  • Documents compounded products using appropriate technology (Simplify, Epic, IMS, etc.).
  • Supports training new technicians in sterile compounding and specialized tasks.
  • Performs monthly air and surface sampling as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates proper behavior in ISO environments (handwashing, garbing, aseptic technique).
  • Monitors temperature/humidity and pressure, maintaining proper documentation.
  • Properly uses and maintains Primary Engineering Controls.
  • Inspects areas and removes outdated medications and supplies.
  • Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities

  • Attends meetings, conferences, seminars as required.
  • Uses Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Follows health and safety regulations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Ensures licenses and certifications are current.

License/Certification/Education

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified by PTCB or ExCPT.
  • Passes and remains competent in UMass sterile compounding program following USP 797/800 standards.
Experience/Skills

Required:

  • 3 years of previous experience.
  • Proficiency in math, computer skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Positive work ethic, motivated, professional, team-oriented.

Equivalent education and experience may be substituted if it provides proficiency in the responsibilities listed.
