Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pharmacy Technician II in the Inpatient Pharmacy. In this role, you will be preparing medications and supplies for dispensing under the supervision of a pharmacist and will rotate through all work areas of the pharmacy department. This department supports and provides direct patient care to patients of all ages and populations. The Inpatient Pharmacy is known for providing exceptional assistance for complex medical needs, collaborating with medical providers and insurance companies, and ensuring patients achieve the most benefit from their therapy.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician II prepares inventories, orders drugs and supplies, receives drugs, and stocks shelves across pharmacy locations. In the absence of a pharmacist, you will facilitate the timely distribution of medications by prioritizing orders, seeking pharmacist checks when necessary, and handling STAT orders. You will complete and pass annual technician competencies, comply with all policies and laws, prepare outpatient prescriptions, perform cashiering duties, and assist in training new staff.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Transport medications, IVs, TPNs, chemotherapy, and supplies to nursing units and clinics. Restock Omnicell machines and return outdated medications.
  2. Replace CPR cart medications after events and transfer patient-specific medications during patient transfers.
  3. Work across all pharmacy areas, maintain workspaces, answer calls, and perform inspections and restocking as needed.
  4. Triages phone communication, collects quality assurance data, and performs other duties within legal scope as assigned.
  5. Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including prepackaging, compounding, and restocking.
  6. Manage inventories, order drugs, receive shipments, and stock shelves.
  7. Facilitate medication distribution in pharmacist’s absence, prioritize orders, and handle STAT requests.
  8. Complete annual competencies and comply with all regulations and policies.
  9. Prepare outpatient prescriptions and perform cashiering duties as needed.
  10. Assist in training new staff and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • IV compounding experience (hazardous and non-hazardous)
  • At least one year pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP-approved course, or enrollment in a pharmacy program
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Knowledge of pharmacy practices, medications, record keeping, and computer skills
  • Ability to work with attention to detail and sensitivity to patient care issues
Preferred Qualifications
  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification
