Job summary

Allegheny Health Network seeks a Pharmacy Technician to provide distributive pharmacy services and support for the pharmacist. The role covers order entry, preparation, inventory control, and customer interaction with a focus on accuracy and compliance.

Outpatient and inpatient duties include insurance adjudication where applicable, compounding for IV therapies, and safe operation of central-fill equipment. A PA-Board registration path is required by start date.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or ExCPT (NHA) required.
• Pharmacy technician training program or 1 year of equivalent experience.
• Registration as Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician with PA State Board by start date.
• Preferred: 1 year of pharmacy experience in the respective area.

Responsibilities

• Processes medication orders including computer order entry, preparation and assembly before pharmacist check.
• Maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies per policies and uses pharmacy computer systems.
• Provides courteous customer service; takes prescriptions, documents information, and releases medications per policy.
• Outpatient Techs: validates Medicaid/Medicare or commercial insurance coverage and handles adjudication, cash, deposits and reports.
• Inpatient Techs: compounds, stocks, repackages and batches from bulk medications; prepares IV orders.
• Central Fill: safe operation of equipment including forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Provides distributive pharmacy services, assistance and support for the registered pharmacist.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Processes medication orders including computer order entry, medication preparation and assembles all items prior to pharmacist final check. (25%)
• Maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies according to established policies and procedures, including inspection of assigned areas and use of pharmacy computer systems. (25%)
• Provides customer service by taking patient's prescriptions and documenting all required information, handles all customer interactions in a courteous and efficient manner, and releases medications required by policy/procedure. (25%)
• For Outpatient Techs: Validates Medicaid, Medicare, or commercial insurance drug coverage and ensures adjudication is complete addressing any error messages, plus handles cash, prepares deposits and accounting reports. (25%)
• For Inpatient Techs: Compounds, stocks, repackages and batches from bulk medications. Prepares routine patient orders for IV pharmaceuticals including compounding, preparation and labeling of any IV admixture including antibiotics, solutions, irrigations, narcotics, parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy (25%)
• Central Fill Pharmacy: Safe operation of equipment assigned, including but not limited to: forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks, or other material handling equipment
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum
• High school diploma/GED
• Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or ExCPT (NHA)
• completion of a pharmacy technician training program or 1 year equivalent experience
• Effective June 28, 2026; upon hire and before start date, registration as Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician through the PA State Board of Pharmacy.
• Preferred
• 1 year of pharmacy experience in respective area.
