Pharmacy Technician I Atrium Health University City FT

Assists the registered pharmacists in performing technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of various oral and intravenous medications. Duties are performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Essential Functions

  1. Fills and delivers medication orders for all age groups under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  2. Answers and screens telephone calls and refers calls to a pharmacist when appropriate.
  3. Performs cart fills, refills automated dispensing machines, restocks emergency boxes and kits.
  4. Processes charges and credits for medications.
  5. Compounds and repackages oral medications.
  6. Documents and delivers controlled substances.
  7. Compounds sterile preparations utilizing proper aseptic technique; follows USP 797 guidelines.
  8. Compounds hazardous high-risk preparations utilizing proper aseptic technique; follows USP 800 guidelines.
  9. Performs medication reconciliation for patients being admitted to the hospital.
  10. Performs computer order entry of ambulatory prescriptions independently.

Physical Requirements

Works primarily in the pharmacy. Delivers medications to nursing units. Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing mobile carts up to 50 pounds, and lifting 25 pounds of material. May need to frequently stretch, bend, squat, or kneel. Uses appropriate personal protective equipment to minimize exposure to hazardous agents and takes precautions against needle sticks, cuts, or bruises. Exposed to various conditions such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, and temperature/humidity changes. Must perform manipulative skills like writing, typing, and data entry. Must have use of both hands, clear vision to read small type, and effective communication skills. Able to hear normal sounds with moderate background noise. Involves rotating shifts.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Pharmacy Technician Board Certificate preferred. At least 6 months of prior Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
