Job summary

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health seeks a Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacists by handling technical duties across inpatient and hospital operations. You will assist with automated dispensing cabinets, repackaging, and preparing non-sterile medications in accordance with safety and compounding guidelines.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED and is a registered WA Pharmacy Technician. You will work in a fast-paced health system, focusing on accurate medication distribution

Qualifications

  • WA DOH Pharmacy Technician registration is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate pharmacy automation and medication computer software and hardware, optimizing safety and efficiency.
  • Accurately obtaining, labeling, and re-packaging medications as needed.
  • Accurately filling and distributing medications through first fill, cart fill and/or automated drug systems.
  • Complete inspections of medication rooms for regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain expiration dates and appropriately outdating inventory.
  • Prepare non-sterile medications, including hazardous drugs, adhering to safety protocols and compounding guidelines.
  • Process patient medication orders and billing adjustments as required.
  • Deliver medications to nursing units and assist with inventory management.
  • Report medication errors and ensure secure access to pharmacy areas.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Pharmacy Technician, you will be vital in managing the technical duties in the pharmacy to allow the pharmacist to pursue the clinical areas of pharmacy practice and ensure that optimal patient care is provided. This multifaceted role ensures the efficient, accurate, and safe handling of medications across various inpatient and technical functions within our health system.

Every day, you will meticulously perform a range of essential tasks, including servicing automated dispensing cabinets, ensuring accurate inventory and functionality. You will be responsible for pre-packing medications and delivering medications to nursing units, maintaining timely and safe distribution. A key responsibility will be preparing non-sterile medications, including hazardous drugs, adhering strictly to safety protocols and compounding guidelines.

To excel in this role, you must possess exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining rigorous safety and quality standards. You should proactively contribute to an efficient workflow, demonstrate excellent communication, and continuously strive to enhance patient care through diligent and accurate technical support.

Job Requirements

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Registered Pharmacy Tech in the state in which the employee work - WA DOH Pharmacy Technician

Should demonstrate competency and is responsible for:

  • Accurately obtaining, labeling, and re-packaging medications as needed
  • Accurately filling and distributing medications through first fill, cart fill and/or automated drug systems
  • Completing inspections of medication rooms for regulatory compliance
  • Accurately maintaining expiration dates and appropriately outdating inventory
  • Operating pharmacy automation and medication computer software and hardware, optimizing safety and efficiency
  • Applying knowledge of generic/trade name medications and different dosage formulations (i.e. ER,XR,SR)
  • Applying knowledge of medications and their preparation requirements and limitations (i.e. high risk, do not tube, hazardous, etc.)
  • Accurately processing patient medication orders and billing adjustments as required
  • Performing specialized Narcotic Distribution
  • Operating AutoPacker to repackage oral and topical prepackage doses, ensuring Federal repackaging guidelines
  • Accurately performing pharmaceutical calculations
  • Managing time effectively
  • Properly disposing of medications according to state and federal law
  • Reporting medication errors appropriately
  • Managing patient home medication acquisition and dispensing per hospital policy
  • Maintaining secure access of pharmacy areas (use of panic button, magnetic lock, doorbell, keypad access)
  • Accurately performs pharmaceutical calculations on injectable medications with a narrow therapeutic index

Must have training in applicable EHR, pharmacy automation, and computer applications.
