Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring a casual Pharmacy Technician to work in the inpatient pharmacy at the main hospital location in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh.
Title and rate of pay will be determined based on education and experience.
The Pharmacy Technician provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by assisting with the sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, medication filling, and medication distribution. The Pharmacy Technician, Associate services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
Duties Include:
- Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
- Assist in the preparation of the proper oral and injectable medications (including intravenous admixtures and TPN) for the correct patient for administration at the appropriate time. Use proper technique in the preparation of medications.
- Work in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs using proper aseptic technique.
- Participate in medication distribution including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and delivery of controlled substances per policy and regulations.
- Retrieve discontinued medications and return (and credit if necessary) to the pharmacy area.
- Develop and maintain positive service relationships during medication distribution.
- Assist in procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
- Provide and receive information to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors, referring drug questions to Staff Pharmacists.
- Ensure safe and secure storage of medications according to regulations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked work environment.
- Practice proper hand hygiene and use computer skills to process and maintain records.
- Maintain documentation such as logs and inventories.
- Finalize sales following proper cash handling policies.
- Comply with laws like HIPAA, OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements.
- Maintain patient information and pharmacy computer system.
- Procure and maintain inventory levels daily.
- Maintain and update automated med stations, stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
- Assist in training pharmacy personnel and students.
- Maintain accurate controlled substance records and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program OR six months of pharmacy technician experience OR six months as a Pharmacy Assistant within UPMC OR enrollment in a college program in good standing.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (renewal required)
- Act 33 (renewal required)
- Act 34 (renewal required)
- Act 73 FBI Clearance (renewal required)
