Responsibilities

Job description

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician serves patients by preparing medications and supporting the pharmacist in the safe and efficient operation of the pharmacy. This position assists pharmacists, the multidisciplinary healthcare team, and patients with medication-related needs while performing operational duties including prescription processing, inventory management, and support of 340B program compliance. The technician ensures adherence to all applicable regulatory requirements, including Board of Pharmacy, DEA, federal regulations, and 340B program guidelines. This position requires a high level of integrity, accuracy, and accountability, as it is a position of trust responsible for protecting patient safety, confidentiality, and medication security.

Communication

Good verbal and written communication skills are required for this position. He or she must be detail oriented, organized and be a problem solver. He or she must be able to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and others, and contribute to a positive environment. The ability to communicate in Spanish, Creole, or both is a plus.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist the pharmacist in the prescription filling process, including data entry, insurance billing, medication preparation, labeling, and dispensing prescriptions accurately and efficiently.
  2. Ensure accurate entry and maintenance of prescription and patient information in the pharmacy management system.
  3. Process insurance claims and troubleshoot rejections, assisting patients with prescription coverage issues to improve medication access and affordability.
  4. Assist patients with medication access and adherence by utilizing appropriate resources, including medication synchronization programs and automatic refill services when appropriate.
  5. Maintain medication inventory, including ordering, stocking, receiving shipments, monitoring stock levels, and removing outdated medications.
  6. Ensure proper inventory management and appropriate inventory group utilization when filling prescriptions.
  7. Provide courteous, empathetic, and professional customer service to patients in person, by phone, or via text, ensuring a positive patient experience.
  8. Maintain a secure, safe, and clean pharmacy workspace by following regulations, infection control standards, and organizational policies and procedures.
  9. Maintain and reconcile the pharmacy cash drawer daily according to finance and cash handling procedures.
  10. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and pharmacy regulations.
  11. Assist in maintaining 340B program compliance and inventory management, ensuring proper utilization to prevent diversion and duplicate discounts in accordance with program requirements.
  12. Prepare prescriptions for ancillary pharmacy services, including compliance packaging and medication delivery or shipment, and support the implementation of additional pharmacy services as they are developed.
  13. Assist pharmacists with other duties as assigned.
Education & Training
  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. Active Florida Pharmacy Technician License in good standing required.
  3. Ability to be trained and proficient in electronic medical records (EMR), pharmacy management software, unit-dose packaging software, wholesaler purchasing systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
Experience
  1. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a community health center, retail/community pharmacy, or hospital pharmacy setting preferred
  2. Knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program preferred.
Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time
  2. Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  3. Ability to communicate effectively using written and spoken English
  4. Demonstrated visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform job duties.
Additional Requirements
  1. Must maintain all required vaccinations in accordance with organizational policy.
  2. Annual tuberculosis screening (PPD or equivalent) required.
  3. Compliance with the organization's influenza vaccination policy.
  4. Successful completion of a Level 2 background screening required.
  5. Travel to other clinic locations as required.
