Job summary

La Familia Health Santa Fe is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support medication preparation, dispensing, and inventory management in a busy clinic pharmacy. The role follows NM Board of Pharmacy guidelines and supports physicians, midlevel practitioners, and nurses who provide direct patient care.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, completion of a certified Pharmacy Technician program, and NM licensure with CPhT/EXCPT within one year.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician program or equivalent.
  • NM pharmacy technician license required, with CPhT or EXCPT within 1 year of licensure.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Fluent in English; Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process prescription orders with complete patient and provider information.
  • Maintain inventory, stock shelves, and remove expired items per policy.
  • Receive and inventory drugs and supplies; label and price items per LFH procedures.
  • Coordinate with patients and third-party pharmacies for orders and PAP/IPP programs.
  • Ensure accurate medication distribution and return-to-stock processes in the system.
  • Support pharmacists and perform other assigned pharmacy duties as needed.

Position Function Summary

Under the direction of the Pharmacy Director/Pharmacy Manager and Chief Medical Officer, the Pharmacy Technician works within the scope defined and allowed by the NM Board of Pharmacy (NMBOP) and performs activities related to the inventory, typing prescriptions, stocking the shelves, preparation and distribution of prescription medications for labeling by and in support of physicians, midlevel practitioners, and nurses who provide direct patient care at La Familia Health (LFH).

Essential Responsibilities
  • Receives and processes prescription orders while assuring that all required and essential information is documented on the prescription in order to process (such as patient name, date of birth (DOB), allergy information, patient phone number/address, provider’s name/address/phone/NPI/DEA, written date, medication name/strength/instructions/quantity/refills, provider’s signature/authorization, etc.).
  • Checks inventory and stocks daily. Assists with ordering inventory for pharmacy and clinic medications. Removes expired and recalled drug inventory as indicated. Assures compliance with Title X and DOH/VFC orders.
  • Receives, inventories, and places incoming drugs, medication samples, and supplies in the appropriate storage area(s), tagging and pricing each item according to directions and LFH procedures.
  • Rotates stock, moving older medications to the front of the shelf so it is used before expiration date. Checks and removes expired inventory, disposes of them according to New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) and/or LFH policies and procedures.
  • Receives orders(s), documents receipt/dispensation, and coordinates with patients on orders for third-party pharmacies (including but not limited to: mail order prescriptions, specialty medication prescriptions, Indigent Pharmaceutical Program (IPP; also known as Patient Assistance Programs (PAP)). The technician is expected to maintain open communication with patient and clinical staff to assure timely and accurate dispensation of third-party prescriptions, advising case workers or other LFH staff of any info that is pertinent to the patient’s order(s).
  • Reviews and processes prescription return to stocks daily. Assures all medications returned to stock are properly reversed within pharmacy software, removed from waiting bin, labeled with appropriate return to stock labeling, and report of returns is filed in accordance with NMBOP and LFH procedures.
  • Follows best practices for prescription entry and dispensation including but not limited to: using two forms of patient identification (name, DOB, phone number, address) for all patient-specific processes, searching for drug by name (at least the first five (5) letters) and strength (i.e. ATORV,20 for atorvastatin 20 mg), using barcode technology when available for all stages of prescription workflow, documentation of DAW codes & prescription notes when brand name medications are required for prescription dispensation, collection of valid state/federal identification when required, processing return to stock medications and labeling according to procedure, performing back count of all controlled substances as indicated in current policies and procedures.
  • Assists in checking crash carts (aka emergency kits) for expired medications.
  • Works in cooperation with and supports the pharmacists.
  • Other required pharmacy functions as assigned.
Education, Experience And Skills/Training
  • High school graduate or GED certificate and graduation from a technical school with appropriate degree and/or certification such as approved Pharmacy Technician Program required. Pharmacy Technician trainees are accepted with the intent to certify within one (1) year. Six months of related experience is required or any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources. New Mexico pharmacy technician license required, with technician certification (CPhT or EXCPT) within one year of initial licensure.
  • CPR & first aid certification required.
  • LFH required training Including, but not limited to basic annual safety, bloodborne pathogen, infectious control, hazardous communication, HIPAA training, 340B university, Medicare Part C & D fraud waste & abuse, DOH required trainings.
  • Basic knowledge and ability of general office procedures including filing, copying, faxing, use of a computer, to multitask within established deadlines, work under the direction of a supervisor and follow instructions for work completion, and take initiative to resolve patient concerns and problems
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish, preferred.
