Job description

Position Title: Pharmacy Technician

Varies - PRN Olathe Hospital, 20333 W. 151st St.

Position Summary / Career Interest:

Under the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law and standard procedures, compounds, dispenses, and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Prepares sterile products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines; pre-packs and compounds medications; enters charges into computer; makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IVs; and performs other technical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:

1. Demonstrates expertise in the technician role by staying abreast of departmental practices and policies, performing within the pharmacy practice act, and understanding all required duties and their timelines.
2. Utilizes good judgment in responding to customer needs and voices concerns to the pharmacist or nurse when patient safety is at risk.
3. Manages pharmacy systems including Pyxis, pharmacy information system, mobile isolation chambers, and the packager accurately and efficiently.
4. Exhibits effective problem-solving skills, minimizing errors in dose calculations, labeling, and dispensing.
5. Consistently meets work schedule.
6. Collects complete medication histories from emergency patients, including OTC and herbal medications, and records histories accurately in the electronic medical record.
7. Effectively triages during high-volume periods to determine priority of medication histories and other tasks during low patient census.
8. Performs the professional, clinical, and technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
9. Performs other duties as required; responsibilities may vary depending on the department or unit.

Required Education and Experience:

• High School Graduate

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician training program
• Previous healthcare experience

Required Licensure and Certification:

• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 1 year
• Pharmacy Technician Registration with the State Board of Pharmacy (may be conferred during orientation)
