Job description

Overview

We’re building a world of health around every individual—shaping a more connected, convenient and compassionate health experience. CVS Health focuses on transforming health care, improving access, reducing costs, and being a trusted partner for every meaningful moment of health. Within our Retail locations, Pharmacy Technicians play a critical role in supporting our pharmacy teams to deliver on our brand promise with care.

Job Purpose and Summary

As a Technician, you will support the pharmacy team in delivering operational and service excellence within your store. Technicians are often the first point of contact to assist patients and customers, delivering an exceptional experience. You will help ensure pharmacy operations run smoothly, prescriptions are filled promptly, safely, and accurately, and care meets patient expectations. Technicians work as part of the pharmacy team through standard operating procedures, best practices, and effective communication, contributing to a safe and inclusive culture where all people feel valued.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to safe and effective pharmacy operations, following all SOPs at each workstation to help pharmacists manage and improve patient health.
  • Follow pharmacy workflow procedures at each workstation (production, pick-up, drive-thru, drop-off) for safe and accurate prescription fulfillment.
  • Enhance patient experiences by showing empathy and genuine care—serving patients at pick-up, drive-thru, and over the phone; offering immunizations and other services; and solving or escalating patient problems.
  • Complete basic inventory activities as permitted by law and directed by the pharmacy leadership team, including stocking deliveries, cycle counts, returns-to-stocks, and waiting bin inventories.
  • Contribute to a high-performing team, embrace a growth mindset, and seek opportunities to expand clinical and technical knowledge to better assist patients.
  • Remain flexible for scheduling and business needs, contribute to a safe, inclusive, and engaging team dynamic; voluntary travel to stores in the market may be required.
  • Understand and comply with all relevant laws, regulations, professional standards, and ethical principles; adhere to CVS policies to ensure patient safety, controlled substance dispensing and recordkeeping, and patient privacy and security.
  • Deliver additional patient health care services (e.g., immunizations, point-of-care testing, and staffing offsite clinics where allowable by law and supported by training).

Where permissible, the Technician may also support immunizations, which includes the following responsibilities:

  • Complete additional licensure and training to obtain Technician Immunizer status and support preparing and administering vaccines.
  • Educate patients about vaccines and refer vaccine questions to the Pharmacist-on-duty.
  • Monitor for adverse reactions and report events per public health requirements.
  • Review and collect patient information; track and document for each applicable patient.
  • Monitor and manage vaccine supplies.
Required Qualifications
  • Must comply with state board of pharmacy requirements or laws governing practice, including age, education, and licensure/certification.
    • If the state board does not address a minimum age, the candidate must be at least 16 years of age.
    • If the state board does not address a minimum educational requirement, the candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be actively enrolled in high school or a high school equivalency program.
  • State-level licensure and national certification requirements vary by state.
Essential Functions
  • Regular and predictable attendance, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to complete required training within the designated timeframe.
  • Attention and Focus
    • Concentrate on a task over a period of time.
    • Pivot quickly between tasks to meet patient and business needs.
    • Confirm prescription information and label accuracy to ensure patient safety.
  • Customer Service and Team Orientation
    • Actively look for ways to help people in a friendly manner.
    • Notice and understand patients’ reactions and respond appropriately.
  • Communication Skills
    • Use and understand verbal and written communication with patients and colleagues.
    • Practice active listening to understand points being made and ask appropriate questions.
  • Mathematical Reasoning
    • Apply math to solve problems such as determining total tablets to dispense, days’ supply, and bottle counts.
  • Problem Resolution
    • Identify challenging interactions and choose the best course of action when faced with multiple options.
  • Physical Demands
    • Be mobile and upright for extended periods; lift, scan and bag items; reach overhead; handle repetitive finger movements.
    • Move and place items; adjust machines to exact positions; stoop and bend as required to move items.
    • Close visual acuity for transcribing and reading; lift up to 20 lbs occasionally, up to 10 lbs frequently.
    • Communicate detailed information orally as required.
  • Any additional tasks as directed by Supervisor or Manager.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Experience in a pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service setting.
  • Ability to work in the home store and across the market to meet business needs.
