Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support Specialty Pharmacy Services, including transplant, hepatitis, MS, rheumatology, oncology, and more. You will assist in medication preparation, packaging, dispensing, and patient communication.

The role requires Michigan Pharmacist Technician licensure, strong communication and computer skills, and ability to perform physical duties. Work hours are day shift, with potential hybrid arrangements at department discretion.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required or combined education/experience.
  • Current Michigan Pharmacy Technician license (temporary for 1 year or full) upon hire.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic math skills are required.
  • This position requires primary source verification.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming and outgoing communications to/from patients, arranging timely shipment and delivery of medications.
  • Act as liaison between prescribers, insurance PBMs, and outside pharmacies.
  • Work with clinical, medication access, and distribution teams to ensure timely patient care.
  • Type and adjudicate prescriptions.
  • Investigate and resolve Third-Party Rejections.
  • Document all patient interactions in appropriate systems and databases.
  • Prepare non-sterile compound medications.
  • Organize and store filled prescription medications using Smart-Shelf storage.
  • Manually package medications for shipment.
  • Assist in stocking and storage of inventory.
  • Maintain and replenish automated filling PODS.
  • Spend most of a shift standing or walking, with potential >5 miles daily; lift/push/pull >20 pounds.

Job Summary

Specialty Pharmacy Services supports a growing range of patient populations, including Transplant, Hepatitis, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatology, Oncology, and many other disease states. Our team is committed to guiding patients throughout their entire treatment journey by providing comprehensive support ranging from timely financial counseling and clinical education to reliable mail-order medication delivery .

Specialty Pharmacy Technicians work within one of two operational areas. Requirements, duties, and responsibilities align respectively. Cross coverage and movement between teams is possible dependent on departmental and patient care needs.

Responsibilities*

  • Spend most of a shift standing or walking, often walking >5 miles. Staff are regularly required to lift, push, or pull boxes or carts weighing >20 pounds

Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability: Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills.
  • This position requires primary source verification

  • Completion of a Pharmacy technician training program.
  • Experience in adjudicating and preparing non-sterile compounds.

Licensure & Certification

The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support technicians to become certified and licensed.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .

Work Schedule

This is a day shift position Monday through Friday with hours from 8:0 0 am to 5:00 pm. Closed weekends and holidays.Subject to change based on business needs.

This position is located at Joy Rd Service Center.
