Job summary

LCMC Health is seeking a Senior Pharmacy Technician in Metairie, LA. The role supports pharmacy operations, prepares unit dose, IV meds, and compounding, and ensures accurate delivery of medications to patients.

The incumbent will train junior staff and participate in QA activities to uphold regulatory standards. Applicants should have at least 3 years of hospital pharmacy tech experience and be licensed by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy; CPTCB certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• 3 years of experience as a Pharmacy/hospital pharmacy technician or equivalent.
• High school diploma or technical/vocational training.
• Licensed as pharmacy technician in Louisiana; CPTCB certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, package, and dispense medications; unit dose, compounded oral, and IV preparations.
• Verify medications and facilitate delivery to maintain product integrity.
• Answer calls, triage requests, and manage messages to support patient care.
• Perform QA audits and document refrigerator/freezer temperatures and cleaning logs.
• Participate in training, competency assessments, and ongoing education.
• Guide and mentor junior technicians as needed.

The Pharmacy Technician Senior provides technical support to the pharmacy/healthcare professional(s) through medication preparation, delivery of medications, and cartfill exchange. Performs technical duties in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements. Provides direction to new/junior technicians as required.

GENERAL DUTIES

Medication Preparation:

• Procures, receives, prepares, packages, distributes, and disposes of medications and pharmaceutical supplies to assist the department in providing quality pharmaceutical care for all patients. Prepares unit dose, compound oral, and intravenous medications. Repackages medications in unit dosage forms. Stocks medications and supplies. Follows appropriate ordering procedures, restocks medications and other supplies in patient care areas/clinics.

Medication Delivery:

• Ensures product verification by the appropriate pharmacy professional and facilitates the distribution of medications to maintain product integrity.

Prioritization and Triaging:

• Responds to customers' needs by answering phone calls, receiving and distributing messages, and triaging requests appropriately. Understands, implements appropriate time management and prioritization of tasks ensuring optimum patient care.

Quality Assurance:

• Conducts regular quality assurance inspections/audits focused on TJC/LBOP requirements, including product and equipment examinations regarding integrity and expiration. Completes logs to include refrigerator/freezer temperature monitoring and required cleaning.

Training/Education/Professional:

• Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Completes all required training, competency assessments and attends educational in-services as appropriate.

Guidance:

• Provides guidance to new team members and junior level technicians as required.
