Overview

Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician engages in the preparation, control, and distribution of medications. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  1. Accurately and efficiently perform computer functions according to department policies, including the pharmacy computer system/electronic health record, automated dispensing equipment, packaging machine software, and departmental email.
  2. Understand pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, symbols, and commonly used terminology in prescribing and dispensing medications. Perform calculations necessary to prepare compounded medications.
  3. Process new prescriptions and refills. Fill medication orders accurately and timely, including new or lost doses, floor stock replacement items, and unit dose cartfill.
  4. Transport medication to/from nursing units, including controlled substances, per department protocol/policy.
  5. Restock automated dispensing cabinets according to current department procedures.
  6. Perform non-sterile and sterile compounding using aseptic technique under supervision, including products like parenteral nutrition, IV products, and hazardous medications or chemotherapy.
  7. Respond to phone inquiries and walk-up service requests, resolving or redirecting issues appropriately.
  8. Restock emergency/crash carts and kits as per department protocol.
  9. Assist in maintaining drug and department supplies at appropriate levels, including checking in, scanning, packaging, and barcoding medications.
  10. Perform monthly inspections of assigned areas for medication storage, control, and dating. Remove expired medications, rotate stock, and organize areas.
  11. Maintain licensure, continuing education, and competency requirements; update knowledge and skills regularly through departmental meetings, educational programs, and in-services.
  12. Assist in developing and maintaining training materials as needed.
  13. Assist in special projects not requiring clinical decision-making as assigned by pharmacy leadership.
  14. Assist in training new staff members.
  15. Travel to Carle Eureka Hospital may be required for services such as automated dispensing equipment restock and maintenance.

Compensation and Benefits
