Responsibilities

  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain sterile compounding areas.
  • Document compounding, cleaning, testing, and equipment certification.
  • Operate specialty machinery and equipment (e.g., baxa pumps, dispense prep and check).
  • Understand sterility testing systems, USP compounding standards, and state board rules for sterile and hazardous compounding.
  • Assist in ordering, managing, and monitoring drug inventory with PAR level awareness.
  • Teach and mentor Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, and students.
  • Maintain competency to perform in at least two other operation areas.
  • Compound, package, and label sterile hazardous and chemotherapy preparations per USP.

Shift: Rotates between 6:00AM-4:30PM & 7:30AM-6:00PM; Rotating Every Third Weekend

Summary

The Pharmacy Technician III can function independently of the pharmacist (at least 85% of the time) and works in specialized areas, including hazardous sterile compounding, critical care, hematology/oncology, and emergency room.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to and resolve inquiries and questions (telephone and direct) within the limits of the law with at least 85% independence from the supervising pharmacist or team leader.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area.
  • Assist in maintaining overall cleanliness and organization of work area and maintaining a continuous level of readiness for inspection by external groups.
  • Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining the integrity of sterile compounding areas.
  • Maintain and monitor proper documentation of compounding, cleaning (including deactivations and decontamination of hazardous drugs), testing, and certification of equipment and compounding areas.
  • Efficient operation of specialty machinery, equipment, and technology (e.g. baxa pumps, dispense prep and check).
  • Proficient with understanding sterility testing systems, USP compounding standards, and state board of pharmacy rules related to sterile and hazardous compounding.
  • Assists with ordering, managing, and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
  • Participates in teaching activities, including but not limited to, precepting Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Students, Pharmacists, and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Maintains competencies to perform in at least two other operation areas outside the primary work area.
  • Compounding, packaging, and labeling of sterile hazardous and chemotherapy preparations in accordance with USP regulations.
  • Competent and efficient in using closed-system drug-transfer devices (CSTD).
  • Trained on hazardous drug exposure and spill control, including treatment of individuals accidentally exposed to hazardous.
Work Experience
  • At least 5 years experiences as a health-system pharmacy technician and/or experience in sterile compounding required.
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent Required.
  • 20-hour ACPE accredited IV training course Required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician Required.
  • National Certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for ICU pharmacy technicians only 90 Days Required.
  • Chemotherapy certification course (required for Sterile Compounding and Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician). Effective 10/1/2025 team members will have 180 days to obtain certification. 180 Days Required.
  • Completion of PTCB-recognized medication history certificate exam (for transitions of care pharmacy technician) Preferred.
