Job summary

Job description

Position Summary

This role, under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist, assists in the procurement, storage, preparation, distribution, and delivery of medications and information and other pharmaceutical products to Phoenix Children’s patients in a timely and accurate fashion and in accordance with established regulations and procedures. It performs hazardous and non-hazardous sterile compounding, assists with development, maintenance, and assessment of department policy and procedures, and must maintain at least two position specific competencies in accordance with the Pharmacy Department competency requirements. The role receives direct supervision from Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisors and Managers.

Position Duties
  • Medication preparation and dispensing
    • Prepare, dispense, and deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas.
    • Assist in accurately preparing and labeling medications in accordance with Board of Pharmacy regulations and department policy, deferring to Pharmacist when appropriate.
    • Verify accuracy under pharmacist supervision prior to dispensing.
  • Compounding
    • Sterile and non‑sterile compounding of cytotoxic medications in a negative‑pressure space per USP 797, USP 800, and applicable regulations.
    • Sterile compounding of hazardous and non‑hazardous medications per USP 797/800 and applicable regulations, completing required records and documentation.
    • Non‑sterile compounding and repackaging of hazardous and non‑hazardous medications per USP 795, USP 800 and applicable regulations.
  • Inventory and distribution
    • Restock automated dispensing cabinets, rotate stock, and remove expiring medications.
    • Assist in maintaining inventory levels and supply chain coordination.
  • Medication use programs
    • Collect and document medication histories from patients, families, and external providers.
    • Follow standard operating procedures for medication reconciliation.
  • Information system
    • Process pharmacy requisitions and medication requests using pharmacy information software.
    • Bills and credits medications to patient charge records for accurate revenue capture.
  • Customer service
    • Answer phone calls and provide direct service at the pharmacy pick‑up window.
    • Triage calls, defer to Pharmacist when issues are outside normal scope, and resolve customer service issues independently where appropriate.
  • Quality assurance and waste management
    • Complete temperature logs, unit inspections, inventory management logs, and other quality measures.
    • Follow department and hospital policies for waste control of pharmaceutical and non‑pharmaceutical waste.
  • Miscellaneous duties as requested.
Position Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
Experience
  • One or more years of experience as a Phoenix Children’s Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy Technician OR 4 or more years of hospital pharmacy experience at an outside institution (Required)
Special Skills
  • Experience with various types of computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite (Required)
Additional Requirements
  • Licensed Pharmacy Technician in the State of Arizona (Required)
  • National Certification PTCB, ExCPT or equivalent (Required)
  • One or more PTCB certifications (e.g., Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician, Hazardous Drug Management Certificate, Medication History Certificate) (Preferred)
  • Current BLS Certification and/or Technician Product Verification Certificate (Preferred)
