Job summary

University Hospitals Pain Management is seeking a Pharmacy Technician 4 to perform advanced functions across inpatient, outpatient, medication history, and infusion workflows, with emphasis on training staff and coordinating technical operations.

Candidates will work with automated dispensing cabinets and pharmacy technology, ensure drug stock integrity, and lead daily huddles and special duties as assigned under UH leadership.

A Brief Overview

The Pharmacy Technician 4 is considered an advanced and/or specialized technician responsible for higher level functions in the pharmacy. These responsibilities may include training and/or orientating new employees, coordinating workflow adjustments, technician staffing adjustments, and assisting in the coordination of the daily technical functions of the department. The Pharmacy Technician 4 also is responsible for performing all the functions of the Technician 1, 2 or 3 when assigned.

What You Will Do
  • For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 4, activities include but are not limited to:
    • Expertly prepares hazardous and non-hazardous compounded sterile products following USP <797> and <800> standards.
    • Oversees the preparation, documentation, and quality assurance of non-sterile compounded formulations in strict accordance with USP <795> standards, ensuring proper beyond-use dating (BUD).
    • Serves as the primary point of contact for triaging and resolving hardware and software malfunctions for Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and pharmacy automation systems, providing support to both pharmacy and nursing units.
    • Proactively manages medication room integrity by conducting inspections to identify and remove outdated or expired products, ensuring all point-of-care inventory is safe and compliant.
    • Manages the escalation of critical technology failures, documenting recurring system errors and collaborating with pharmacy leadership and/or IT to implement long-term technical solutions or workflow optimizations.
    • Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock across all pharmacy storage areas and critical areas outside of the pharmacy, ensuring optimal par levels, accurate cycle counts, and the proactive identification of short-dated or expired medications to minimize waste and prevent stock outs.
    • Documents and tracks recurring system anomalies in ADCs and integrated pharmacy technology.
    • Orients and trains new staff on departmental workflows, safety protocols, and pharmacy technology, serving as a dedicated preceptor to ensure competency and seamless integration into the pharmacy team.
    • Serves as a subject matter expert for particular workflows, providing ongoing education on updated software features, new equipment, and evolving standard operating procedures to maintain a high standard of practice.
    • Cultivates a professional environment by modeling excellence in technical practice and emotional intelligence, encouraging staff to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
    • May oversee daily cold storage chain compliance through electronic refrigerator/freezer temperature monitoring system.
    • Lead daily huddle as assigned
    • Other special duties or responsibilities as assigned
  • For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 4, activities include but are not limited to:
    • Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
    • Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
    • Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
    • Inventory management including par levels, order review and submission, returns processing, recall management, and outdates process oversight.
    • Provides direction to technician staff on day to day operations and performs extensive trainer duties with new hires and/or technician trainees.
    • Extensive buyer duties including purchasing, invoice processing, cost transferring, and specialized ordering.
    • 340B expert including ordering and inventory management, compliance, and cost/product transferring.
    • Participates in new technician candidate interviews and assists with performance appraisals.
  • For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 4, activities include but are not limited to:
    • Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
    • Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
    • Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
    • Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions.
  • For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 4, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
