Job summary

Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital is seeking a Pharmacy Technician 2 to support pharmacists in retrieving, processing, preparing, and distributing medications for patient administration. This role operates under the supervision of a Pharmacist and may perform all Technician 1 duties when assigned.

Key duties include preparing sterile and non-sterile formulations, delivering medications to nursing units, restocking ADCs, monitoring stock levels, training new staff, and maintaining PHI

Responsibilities

• Assist pharmacists in retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration.
• Prepare compounded sterile products in accordance with USP standards and aseptic technique.
• Deliver patient-specific medications to nursing units with prioritization of STAT orders.
• Restock ADCs and pharmacy systems, ensuring accurate counts and removal of near-dated/expired meds.
• Monitor drug stock levels and perform routine cycle counts to prevent stockouts.
• Orient and train new staff and ensure a clean, compliant work environment.

A Brief Overview

The Pharmacy Technician 2 is a support-level position that is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 2 functions in all foundational aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician 2 is also responsible for performing all the functions of the Technician 1 when assigned.

What You Will Do

• For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• May prepare compounded sterile products in strict accordance with USP standards and aseptic technique protocols. Assists in the preparation and labeling of non-sterile compounded formulations following USP guidelines
• Ensures the accurate and timely delivery of patient-specific medications to nursing units, prioritizing STAT orders to ensure timely patient care.
• Restocks Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and pharmacy technology systems, ensuring accurate counts and the removal of near-dated or expired medications.
• Monitors drug stock levels in assigned pharmacy areas and med rooms; performs routine cycle counts and identifies items requiring reorder to prevent stockouts.
• Assists with the orientation of new staff to specific tasks or workflows when assigned, focusing on demonstrating standard operating procedures.
• Maintains a clean and organized workspace, adhering to all hand hygiene and garbing requirements.
• Orients and trains new staff.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
• For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
• Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
• Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
• For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
• Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
• Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
• Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions.
• For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 2, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.
