Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician, under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist and in accordance with all State and Federal laws, assists with the selection, procurement, storage, preparation, distribution, record keeping, and financial reconciliation of all medications dispensed to patients of St. Elizabeth Healthcare. While adhering to the ICARE principles and exhibiting the AIDET principles, demonstrates respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and employees, regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
- Provide excellent customer service through interactions with doctors, nurses, and patients contacting the pharmacy. Answer queries or direct calls to the appropriate personnel for resolution. Process Epic messages accurately and promptly. Consistently adhere to ICARE and AIDET principles.
- Assist pharmacists in dispensing medications accurately and timely, including filling medication bins, labels, restocking Pyxis med stations, and ancillary departments.
- Ensure timely receipt and delivery of patient medication information and products by making rounds as needed. Properly distribute medications, including controlled substances, time-sensitive, and life-saving medications. Process ADT (Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers). Assist in ensuring medication compliance with regulatory guidelines on nursing units.
- Participate in the Process Improvement Program and comply with policies related to Infection Control and Safety to enhance patient care and outcomes.
- Verify expiration dates for medications in Pyxis med stations, rotate stock to use the shortest date first, and assist with inventory cycle counts monthly. Process returns correctly, checking expiration dates before restocking.
- Begin sterile compounding training, including medial fill and fingertip testing, utilizing aseptic technique under supervision to compound medications for direct infusion.
- Prepare oral syringe medications for critically ill infants in the NICU where applicable.
- Meet departmental inventory management goals through proper system use.
- Participate in departmental meetings, educational sessions, and communication activities to enhance career development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Registered with the State Board where practicing
- Nationally Certified (PTCB or NHA) or active Intern license
Specialized Knowledge:
- Typing / Computer Keyboarding
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with MS Office
- Understanding of Metric System and Pharmacy Calculations
- IV Admixture Experience
Experience:
- Previous experience as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician preferred
