Job summary

Hennepin Healthcare is seeking a Pharmacy Technician for the Enhanced Care Pharmacy on the Hennepin Healthcare campus. This role supports patients at the Positive Care Clinic with a 0.6 FTE schedule (48 hours per pay period), primarily days and evenings, in-person at the Blue Building.

The position requires Minnesota licensure, pharmacy technician registration, and a willingness to work every 3rd weekend. Responsibilities include dispensing, policy adherence, and patient care support.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with MN State Board.
  • PTCB or ExCPT certification within 1 year of date of hire, paid for by employee.
  • Or Current Intern License with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Answers phones for the pharmacy department and directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains knowledge of the Hospital Credit and Collection Policy and other related policies.
  • Prepackages, prepares, labels, and hands out prescriptions after they are checked by a registered pharmacist.
  • Maintains cash registers, credit card machines, and reporting for cash transactions.
  • Prepares daily deposits for the cashier's office.
  • Bills and credits patient medications.
  • Stocks inventory in Pharmacy.
  • Routinely checks and removes outdated and expired medications.

JOB DETAILS

Department: Enhanced Care Pharmacy

FTE: 0.6 (48 hours per pay period)

Workdays: Monday - Friday and every 3rd weekend

Shift(s): Days/Evenings

Shift Length: 8 hours

Location: In-Person

Other: Every 3rd Saturday and every 6th Sunday in our discharge pharmacy.

This is pharmacy technician position for the Enhanced Care Pharmacy located in the Blue Building of the Hennepin Healthcare campus. This pharmacy exclusively serves patients who receive care at the Positive Care Clinic. The pharmacy is open from 8 am to 5 pm every weekday, with most shifts between 8:30 am and 5 pm, and has been recently renovated to include a filling robot and additional space for patient care and prescription processing. The position does include a every 3rd weekend component (Every 3rd Saturday and every 6th Sunday) in our discharge pharmacy.

Purpose of this position: Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties allowable by law, while maintaining a favorable image of the pharmacy within the hospital and in the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Answers phones for the pharmacy department and directs calls to appropriate personnel
  • Maintains knowledge of the Hospital Credit and Collection Policy and other related policies
  • Prepackages, prepares, labels, and hands out prescriptions after they are checked by a registered pharmacist
  • Maintains cash registers, credit card machines, and reporting for cash transactions
  • Prepares daily deposits for the cashier's office
  • Bills and credits patient medications
  • Stocks inventory in Pharmacy
  • Routinely checks and removes outdated and expired medications
  • Delivers medications to patient care and ancillary areas and picks up new orders as scheduled
  • Files prescriptions and reports
  • Maintains the pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion
  • Enters outpatient prescriptions
  • Obtains and records patient drug histories
  • Triages orders, determines priorities, processes orders, and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate
  • Performs various calculations to determine the correct dose using weight
  • Identifies the appropriate product to process based on the prescription order
  • Triages insurance rejections and initiates prior authorization claims as needed
  • Uses appropriate pharmaceutical-medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols
  • Maintains a working knowledge of general chemical and physical properties of drugs
  • Compounding medications as per Minnesota Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations
  • Responsible for safe and careful handling of chemotherapeutic medications
  • Coordinates ordering and delivery of medications, supplies, and equipment to patients and clinical areas as requested
  • Completes intake process for mail service, specialty, transplant, and limited distribution pharmacy patients including new patient enrollment, insurance verification, and medication refill and delivery schedule
  • Documents in the EMR or other database applicable patient interactions according to specialty pharmacy practices
  • Performs patient tracking, processing of patient specialty medication claims, customer service, issue resolution and/or escalation
  • Requests and follows up on refill requests, processes Medicare and transplant claims and works on high level adjudicated claims
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to: back up phone coverage, data collection, reporting, process improvement, and maintenance of patient education materials
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GE
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with MN State Board
  • PTCB or ExCPT pharmacy tech certification within 1 year of date of hire, paid for by employee

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with specialty medications in a health system setting
  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or a 240-hour employer-based Technician training Program or 1,000 hours of Pharmacy experience
