Job summary

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital seeks a Medication History Pharmacy Technician to collect patient medication histories in the ED and coordinate with pharmacies, PCPs and nursing homes. This full‑time role requires licensure and institutional knowledge to ensure accurate data and safe patient care.

Responsibilities include documenting medications, communicating with patients and care teams, and assisting in central pharmacy tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
• Virginia Pharmacy Tech License is required.
• CPhT License (NHA or PTCB) is required.
• 2 Years of Pharmacy Experience is required.
• Emergency Department Medication History Experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work in ED to obtain medication history from patients.
• Discuss with patients their current medications.
• Call pharmacies, PCPs, or nursing homes for history when needed.
• May work in central Pharmacy (filling meds, delivery).
• Train new employees on pharmacy processes.
• Fill and deliver medications under licensed supervision.

Sentara is hiring a Medication History Pharmacy Technician for Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Location Virginia Beach General Hospital-Virginia Beach, VA

Status Full Time (40 Hours/wk)

Shift Rotating

Two weekend shifts per month & Holiday Rotation required

The Pharmacy Tech - Clinical performs the technician responsibilities of clinical pharmacy care delivery under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist or licensed independent practitioner.

• Work in ED to get medication history from patients
• Discuss with patient or anyone with patient what meds patient currently is on
• Call pharmacies, PCP, Nursing home to gather additional med history if needed
• May also work in central Pharmacy (Filling meds, delivery of meds)
• Participates in the training of new employees
• Fills and delivers medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner
• Ensures adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care
• Triages and escalates any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician's scope of practice as needed
• Uses appropriate systems for processing patient information
• Ensures quality assurance is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements
• Operates pharmacy equipment appropriately
• Participates in clinical initiatives to continuously improve patient care
• Training in an advanced Clinical Pharmacy Technician job function
• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent

Certification/Licensure

• Virginia Pharmacy Tech License (Required)
• CPhT License (Received through the NHA or PTCB) (Required)

Experience

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $23.50 - $36.36 hourly.
