The role develops understanding of drug distribution and includes dispensing, order entry, and related software use, with opportunities to disseminate drug information as needed.

  • Assist Pharmacist in gathering information to advise nurses, doctors, and patients.
  • Fills and delivers medications for nursing units and Pyxis as needed.
  • Provide good customer service at the Pharmacy window and during rounds.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations regarding confidentiality and privacy.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Intern YR1 supports the mission of the Pharmacy department by ensuring that the right patient receives the right medication in a safe and timely manner under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Develops a full understanding of the drug distribution system and demonstrates competency in carrying out all duties associated with delivering medications to the patient care areas. Uses related computer software, gains experience in the interpretation, verification, order entry, compounding, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies. The Pharmacy Intern may also be involved in disseminating drug information.

Essential Functions
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Work collaboratively with the treatment team to maximize individual patient outcomes.
  • Counsel patients on prescription and over-the-counter medications and devices.
  • Monitor medication therapies through performing profile reviews, interpreting laboratory values, and ensuring drug regimens are consistent with medication use guidelines and protocols.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in gathering information to advise nurses, doctors, and patients on the proper and safe use of medications.
  • Fills and delivers medications requested by nursing units and, as needed, for the Pyxis automated dispensing machine, after a complete check by a registered pharmacist.
  • Performs good customer service skills via telephone or in person at the Pharmacy window and while rounding on patient care areas.
  • Adheres to HIPAA regulations regarding confidentiality and patient privacy.
