Job summary

Minnesota Oncology is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the preparation and dispensing of medications in a clinic admixture room under physician supervision. You will verify orders, maintain accurate records, and help ensure patient safety in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires 2–3 years in pharmacy tech or related health care, knowledge of pharmaceuticals, and the ability to work with chemotherapy preparations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • 2–3 years of pharmacy technician or related health care experience.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, pharmacy calculations, and related medical technology.
  • Graduation from VoTech Pharmacy Technician Program preferred (not required).
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Certificate or State Board Preferred (If not certified at hiring, certification with the first year of employment will be required).
  • Intravenous drug and Chemotherapy compounding experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a physician.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information; verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Under direct supervision, admixes drugs as ordered by physician per guidelines and OSHA requirements.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assists in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintains records; disposes materials properly.
  • Keeps logs for temperature, protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs; maintains documentation.
  • Provides inventory control support, labeling, billing, and basic data entry into department automation.
  • Assists with cleaning and maintenance of the admix area and pharmacy to improve sanitation.

Responsibilities
SCOPE:

Under direct supervision of a physician working within a clinic admixture room, performs the technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation, distribution, record keeping and inventory control. Tasks are subject to sequential or final verification by a registered nurse or a registered pharmacist. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a physician.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information. Verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Under direct supervision, admixes drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and preparing all drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assists in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintain records. Properly disposes all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs.
  • Assists in cleaning hoods daily checking drugs monthly for outdates and other quality assurance activities as assigned.
  • Assists in keeping accurate temperature logs, accurate logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
  • Maintains proper control documentation of medications including lot numbers.
  • Provide support with inventory control of medications. Prepares labels. Files and prepares billing. Basic data entry into department automation. Ordering of medication and supplies as directed.
  • Assist with required cleaning and maintenance of the admix area and the pharmacy department in general to minimize particle counts and improve overall sanitation.
SALARY LEVEL:

$24.50-$31.00

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of pharmacy technician or other related health care experience
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, pharmacy calculations, and related medical technology
  • Graduation from VoTech Pharmacy Technician Program desired but not required
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Certificate or State Pharmacy Board Preferred (If not certified at hiring, certification with the first year of employment will be required)
  • Intravenous drug and Chemotherapy compounding experience preferred, but not required
