Job summary

Minnesota Oncology is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support medication preparation, distribution, and record-keeping in the clinic admixture area. Under physician supervision, you will ensure accurate orders, proper authorization, and compliance with safety guidelines.

Requirements include a high school diploma; 2–3 years of pharmacy tech or related health care experience; IV/chemo compounding experience is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Pharmacy Technician program or equivalent preferred; certification may be required within first year.
• 2-3 years of pharmacy technician or related health care experience desired.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing under physician supervision.
• Verify patient information and physician authorization for orders.
• Admix drugs accurately and timely per department guidelines and OSHA rules.
• Calculate dosage volumes and convert between metric and apothecary units.
• Assist in counting controlled drugs and maintain records; dispose materials after use.
• Clean hoods and monitor drugs monthly for quality assurance.

Scope

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of a physician working within a clinic admixture room, performs the technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation, distribution, record keeping and inventory control. Tasks are subject to sequential or final verification by a registered nurse or a registered pharmacist. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Assists with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a physician.
• Checks all orders for completeness of information. Verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
• Under direct supervision, admixes drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and preparing all drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
• Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
• Assists in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintain records. Properly disposes all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs.
• Assists in cleaning hoods daily checking drugs monthly for outdates and other quality assurance activities as assigned.
• Assists in keeping accurate temperature logs, accurate logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
• Maintains proper control documentation of medications including lot numbers.
• Provide support with inventory control of medications. Prepares labels. Files and prepares billing. Basic data entry into department automation. Ordering of medication and supplies as directed.
• Assist with required cleaning and maintenance of the admix area and the pharmacy department in general to minimize particle counts and improve overall sanitation.

Salary Level

$24.50-$31.00

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Minimum of 2-3 years of pharmacy technician or other related health care experience
• Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, pharmacy calculations, and related medical technology
• Graduation from VoTech Pharmacy Technician Program desired but not required
• Certified Pharmacy Technician Certificate or State Pharmacy Board Preferred (If not certified at hiring, certification with the first year of employment will be required)
• Intravenous drug and Chemotherapy compounding experience preferred, but not required
