Job description

General Summary of Position

We are recruiting an experienced outpatient/community Pharmacist to join our MedStar Pharmacy DC locations on a PRN basis. Shifts needing coverage are 10:30am-7:15pm Monday - Friday and 8am - 4pm Saturdays. Dual-licensed Pharmacists in both DC and MD are a plus.

The Pharmacist evaluates prescribed drugs for appropriateness of dose, efficacy, allergy, interactions, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance, handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations; performs final checks to ensure accuracy in input, labeling, and dispensing; and provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. MedStar Pharmacy is committed to compassionate, world-class care at every patient touchpoint. All associates are accountable for meeting patient experience standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to department goals, adhere to policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards; comply with regulations.
  2. Act as pharmacist in charge in the manager's absence: direct workflow, oversee staff responsibilities, resolve issues, and monitor pharmacy operations.
  3. Perform final checks on prescriptions, verify accuracy, maintain logs and files.
  4. Process prescriptions in the system; evaluate for appropriateness; handle DURs, rejects, preauthorizations; communicate with third-party payors.
  5. Provide clinical guidance to physicians and health professionals; follow up on refill requests; notify physicians of pre-authorization needs and discuss alternatives.
  6. Counsel patients as appropriate.
  7. Participate in meetings, committees, community outreach, and quality improvement teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Licensed as a pharmacist in the District of Columbia (DC) required.

Experience

  • 1-2 years pharmacy experience, preferably retail, required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Pharmacist license in DC, including immunization/vaccination certification, registered with the state board required.
  • CPR certification (BLS, NRP) from AHA or Red Cross required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $100,588 - $190,340.
