Qualifications

• Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy or holder of an FPGEC with completed internship hours.
• Must hold and maintain an active, unrestricted Pharmacist license in good standing from New Jersey.
• Proficiency in EPIC and hospital pharmacy software required for the position.
• PharmD or higher degree preferred; hospital experience or ASHP PGY-1 residency preferred.

Responsibilities

• Reviews, verifies, and processes medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
• Dispenses medications using unit dose systems, Pyxis, and other dispensing technologies.
• Compounds sterile and non-sterile products including IV admixtures and chemotherapy.
• Monitors pharmacokinetics, adjusts renal dosing, reconciles medications, and considers formulary substitutions.
• Oversees pharmacy technicians and delegates tasks to maintain operations.
• Documents clinical interventions accurately in EPIC and related systems.
• Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and providers to ensure safe, high‑quality pharmaceutical care.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and hospital policies.

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacist I plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they optimize patient safety through comprehensive medication therapy management according to legal, regulatory, and hospital standards. They are responsible for reviewing and verifying orders, compounding sterile and non-sterile products, providing direct oversight of pharmacy technicians, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality pharmaceutical care.

A typical day for a Pharmacist I may include:

• Reviews, perfects, and verifies medication orders for completeness, accuracy, and clinical appropriateness in accordance with pharmaceutical care standards
• Prepares or supervises the accurate dispensing of medications including unit dose systems, automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis), and investigational drugs
• Compounds sterile and non-sterile products, including IV admixtures, chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and extemporaneous preparations
• Evaluates critical medication issues by performing pharmacokinetic monitoring, renal dose adjustments, medication reconciliation, and therapeutic or formulary substitutions
• Utilizes downtime efficiently to complete assigned learner modules, maintain competencies, and provide direct oversight and delegation of tasks to pharmacy technicians
• Demonstrates clinical precision by utilizing EPIC to accurately document clinical interventions and daily pharmaceutical activities
• Consults professionally with physicians, nurses, and providers regarding medication therapy while delivering exceptional customer service and drug information
• Maintains strict compliance with regulatory requirements, Department of Pharmacy practice standards, and hospital policies
• Adheres to RWJBarnabas Health organizational competencies and standards of behavior while executing other duties or projects as assigned

• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or other advanced degree preferred
• Previous hospital pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency preferred
