Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health's Pharmacist I at Community Medical Center is accountable for providing safe, effective pharmaceutical care across patient populations, preparing, dispensing, and monitoring medications with clinical judgment.

This role supports neonatal through geriatric care and collaborates with physicians and nurses to optimize outcomes while ensuring compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy or an equivalent foreign pharmacy program required
  • Advanced pharmacy degree preferred
  • Current New Jersey Registered Pharmacist license in good standing required
  • Familiarity with all phases of hospital pharmacy practice required
  • Working knowledge of public health principles and federal and state pharmacy regulations required
  • Understanding of the role of the hospital pharmacy department and its collaboration with other clinical departments required
  • Successful completion of departmental orientation and required competency assessments required
  • Ability to work per diem day or evening shifts as needed

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, verifies, and dispenses medication orders to ensure accuracy, safety, and appropriate therapy for patients across all age groups
  • Prepares and verifies sterile and non-sterile medications, including IV admixtures, in accordance with established policies and regulatory standards
  • Evaluates medication regimens for appropriateness, drug interactions, allergies, dosing, and therapeutic effectiveness
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary care teams to provide clinical recommendations and optimize medication therapy
  • Supervises and supports pharmacy technicians to ensure medication accuracy, regulatory compliance, and efficient pharmacy operations
  • Provides medication counseling, education, consultative services, and Medication Therapy Management when appropriate
  • Monitors patient responses to therapy and recommends adjustments based on clinical findings and evidence-based practices
  • Maintains accurate documentation and complies with all federal, state, hospital, and pharmacy regulations
  • Identifies, documents, and reports medication variances, safety concerns, hazardous conditions, and potential medical errors according to organizational policies
  • Supports safe medication distribution and inventory management while maintaining compliance with controlled substance and medication handling requirements
  • Serves as a clinical resource for healthcare providers by answering medication-related questions and providing pharmaceutical expertise
  • Completes required departmental competencies, continuing education, and mandatory training to maintain clinical excellence
  • Performs additional departmental responsibilities as assigned to support quality patient care and operational efficiency

Pharmacist I – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacist I plays a vital role in delivering safe, effective pharmaceutical care across a diverse patient population. Working with a high level of clinical judgment and independence, they are responsible for preparing, dispensing, and monitoring medications while collaborating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. This role supports patients across all age groups, from neonatal through geriatric care, while maintaining the highest standards of medication safety and regulatory compliance.

A typical day for a Pharmacist I may include:
