Qualifications

Applicants must hold a 6‑year PharmD degree from an ACPE‑accredited College of Pharmacy, be licensed or eligible for licensure in New Jersey, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

Resident Program Overview

The Pharmacy Resident fulfills daily operational responsibilities that assure the safe and effective use of medications in our patients. Residents provide the equivalent of one out of every three weekends of pharmacy practice staffing during the residency program, as well as a holiday commitment, to gain a working knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations. The resident is scheduled to work their required shifts primarily in the Main Pharmacy or Main Pharmacy Sterile Preparation area to gain a comprehensive understanding of hospital pharmacy operations.

Responsibilities
  • Checking unit dose medications for accuracy
  • Reviewing medication orders for appropriateness and checking first doses of IV admixtures and unit dose medications prepared by technicians
  • Ensuring proper technique and accurate preparation of all pharmaceutical products, including oral, IV admixtures, chemotherapeutic, and investigational agents
  • Ensuring the timely and accurate dispensing of drugs and solutions from the pharmacy area
  • Responsible for the accurate filling and dispensing of medication orders used by inpatients
  • Providing drug information to health care professionals and to patients
  • Reviewing physician orders for possible therapeutic problems, contraindications, interactions, allergies, and formulary status of the drug
  • Providing computer order entry for IVs and other computer entry as needed
  • Ensuring compliance with controlled substance distribution and control system
  • Performing and documenting clinical interventions
  • Maintaining competency in all aspects of drug therapy for patients of all age groups
  • Providing pharmaceutical care by assisting other health care providers or providing direct patient care
  • Providing pharmacokinetic consultations as required, specifically addressing drugs with narrow therapeutic indices
  • Participating in drug therapy management during codes
  • Maintaining and updating a patient profile with demographics, diagnosis, allergies, and current medications
  • Discussing medication order clarifications with the prescriber and documenting changes in patient and pharmacy records
  • Reconciling pharmacy and nursing medication records daily
  • Identifying and proceeding with cost avoidance in drug therapy by promoting more cost‑effective regimens, drugs, and by reducing waste
  • Performing administrative tasks as required and when identified
  • Documenting clinical interventions, pharmacokinetic consultations, pharmacotherapeutic consultations, patient consultations, and cost avoidance as part of the Pharmacy Services and hospital documentation programs
  • Assisting in preparing for and maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies, DOH, and TJC
  • Participating on committees, teams, or task forces related to the preceptor’s individual practice area
  • Assisting with coordinating clinical pharmacy activities, schedules, programs, and projects
  • Participating in continuing education programs, meetings, training programs, and related activities
  • Educating patients on admission or discharge medications as necessary or requested
  • Assisting in drug information inquiries
  • Participating as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics P&T Committee and the Medication Management Committee
  • Monitoring patient outcomes in relation to medication use
  • Conducting target drug programs and medication use evaluations as needed
  • Assisting in formulary maintenance by critiquing new entities, comparing medication classes, and developing therapeutic interchanges when applicable
