Job description

Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy/Pharmacy Operations Manager and/or their designee, the Pharmacist is responsible for safely educating, instructing on, preparing, and dispensing medication. The Pharmacist works to order and price merchandise, inventory control, personnel, security, fill prescriptions, verify doctor information and assist the Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacy Operations Manager in compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations.

Contacts and interactions vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as direct interaction with THC’s executive management, community organizers, the general public, THC’s patients, physicians, colleagues, assigned staff, vendors, contractors and consultants for the purpose of providing and exchanging information.

Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for following all Total Health Care’s Best Practice Pharmacy Procedures.
  • Receive, verify, obtain and document refill authorizations and accurately fill prescriptions.
  • Use good professional judgment in the dispensing of medications.
  • Comply with all local, state and federal regulations regarding mandatory consultations on prescription and OTC drugs.
  • Answer regular and doctor phone lines in an expedient and courteous manner using appropriate store greeting.
  • Perform final audit on prescriptions filled by technicians and interns.
  • Supervise ancillary personnel, interns, and technicians.
  • Maintain a perpetual Schedule II inventory and Suboxone inventory.
  • Complete incident reports for prescription errors within 24 hours of notification of error.
  • Competent knowledge of and ability to operate Pharmacy computer system and E-mail.
  • Competent working knowledge of participating third party plans.
  • Thorough knowledge of technician procedure manual.
  • Develop an understanding of the merchandising and selling of pharmacy related items.
  • Provide World Class customer service; e.g., special requests, merchandise returns, inquiries regarding prescriptions, OTC, insurance, customer complaints.
  • Process pharmacy sales and complete all signature logs as required.
  • Perform register functions as needed. Authorize refunds and approve checks and charges.
  • Maintain an awareness of the environment; report actual or potential criminal activity/incidents to proper personnel.
  • Effectively communicate with clinic staff, co-workers, customers and other health professionals.
  • Possess and/or develop communication skills to effectively resolve employee and customer issues, concerns and complaints.
  • Effective inventory management, including cycle counting, returned and outdated merchandise and return to stock prescriptions not picked up.
  • Assist with meeting set pharmacy goals and Key performance Metric goals.
  • Assist with inventory preparation and counts.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and professional pharmacy.
  • Assist with the maintenance of pharmacy computers and equipment.
  • Assume management responsibilities as required in the absence of the pharmacy manager.
  • Assist in training other pharmacy personnel as requested by pharmacy manager.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting pharmacy operations and services.
  • Teamwork approach to daily work routine which involves the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with peers and management.
  • Comply with all store dress code, grooming, attendance, tardiness and sexual harassment policies.
  • Community involvement encouraged with participation in screenings, health fairs, schools and senior centers.
  • Attend all pharmacy staff meetings as required.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Training And Experience Required

  • Pharm D degree from an American Colleges of Pharmacy (ACPE) accredited school
  • 2 years in retail pharmacy setting, experience in an FQHC setting preferred but not required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Pharmacist License issued in the state of Maryland
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification (Preferred, or within 12 months of employment)
