You will conduct independent and collaborative research to characterize materials used in pharmaceutical manufacturing, including container closure systems and drug delivery devices.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in materials or related engineering/biomedical field.
• Demonstrated research in materials science and/or polymer science (doctoral work).
• Strong understanding of material characterization techniques and structure–property relationships.
• Publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct independent and collaborative research on materials and polymer science for pharma manufacturing.
• Characterize material properties (mechanical, chemical, thermal, surface) and structure–property relationships.
• Build knowledge of materials used in Lilly's parenteral and device platforms, including compatibility considerations.
• Investigate material performance, degradation, and failure modes; support root cause analyses.
• Collaborate with TS/MS, R&D, and quality scientists on relevant studies (extractables/leachables, product compatibility, sterilization).
• Integrate research findings into practical specifications, control strategies, and technical reports.
• Author high-quality technical reports, protocols, and scientific documentation.
• Stay current with emerging materials science research and regulatory expectations.
• Present findings to internal stakeholders and contribute to publications or patents.
• Mentor lab associates and/or students where opportunities arise.
