Job summary

Metro YMCA of the Oranges in Livingston, NJ is seeking a part-time fitness professional to educate members on safe workouts, guide wellness goals, and foster community.

Join a growing organization opening West Essex YMCA in December 2026. The role supports operations, upholds safety standards, and maintains equipment; CPR/First Aid AED certification is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire. Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma; College degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge in FMS Screening, Athletic assessments and programing
• Demonstrated experience in Strength & Conditioning Coaching
• Required CPR, First Aid and AED certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire date.
• Working knowledge of body mechanics and physical fitness principles.
• Certification in areas of expertise.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members and staff.

Responsibilities

• Instruct members about safe and effective exercise techniques using gym equipment.
• Answer questions and support members in achieving healthy living goals.
• Build authentic relationships; help members connect with the YMCA.
• Maintain knowledge of wellness trends to provide accurate information.
• Assist with spotting during weight lifting.
• Enforce safety policies and explain safety guidelines to members.
• Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center periodically.
• Report equipment problems to the Director and keep the center clean.
• Complete the Fitness Floor checklist and ensure equipment is maintained.
• Complete opening and closing checklists and sign shifts when applicable.
• Follow YMCA policies and respond to emergencies.
• Attend mandatory meetings and trainings; demonstrate YMCA core values.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements

Essential Functions:

• Instruct members about safe and effective exercise techniques using exercise equipment that includes but is not limited to weight equipment, cardio machines and free weights.
• Answer questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Motivate and assist members and participants with their wellness and fitness programs.
• Build effective and authentic relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
• Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trend to provide effective information and support to members.
• Assist members and participants with spotting while weight lifting.
• Observe participants and members activities; enforce safety regulations and positively explain and interpret all YMCA safety policies.
• Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center periodically.
• Report any equipment problems to the Director and maintain the Fitness Center's cleanliness.
• Complete Fitness Floor checklist (cleaning and maintaining all equipment in Fitness Center) in its entirety.
• Complete opening and closing checklist and sign every shift (when applicable).
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.
• Maintain required certifications.
• Attend mandatory meetings and trainings.
• Demonstrate and model the YMCA's four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
• Exhibit personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association.
• Perform such other job-related duties as may be periodically assigned by the Supervisor.
