Job summary

Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is seeking a motivated, mission-driven fitness professional to guide members in safe, effective workouts and healthy living. You will instruct on equipment use, motivate members and help them achieve their wellness goals.

This position emphasizes strong customer service, safety, and teamwork within the YMCA. You will maintain the fitness center, complete checklists, attend trainings, and uphold the four core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma, Associate/Bachelors Degree in related field preferred or equivalent experience.
• CPR, First Aid and AED Certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Working knowledge of body mechanics and physical fitness principles.
• Certification in areas of expertise.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members and staff.

Responsibilities

• Instruct members about safe and effective exercise techniques using equipment.
• Answer questions from members and motivate them to achieve wellness goals.
• Build authentic relationships with members and connect them with the YMCA.
• Maintain knowledge of wellness trends to provide accurate information.
• Assist with spotting during weight lifting.
• Enforce safety regulations and explain YMCA safety policies.
• Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center; report equipment problems.
• Complete Fitness Floor and opening/closing checklists as required.
• Attend mandatory meetings and trainings; model YMCA values.

Essential Functions

• Instruct members about safe and effective exercise techniques using exercise equipment that includes but is not limited to weight equipment, cardio machines and free weights.
• Answer questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Motivate and assist members and participants with their wellness and fitness programs.
• Build effective and authentic relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
• Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trend to provide effective information and support to members.
• Assist members and participants with spotting while weight lifting.
• Observe participants and members activities; enforce safety regulations and positively explain and interpret all YMCA safety policies.
• Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center periodically.
• Report any equipment problems to the Director and maintain the Fitness Center’s cleanliness.
• Complete Fitness Floor checklist (cleaning and maintaining all equipment in Fitness Center) in its entirety.
• Complete opening and closing checklist and sign every shift (when applicable).
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.
• Attend mandatory meetings and trainings.
• Demonstrate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
• Exhibit personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association.
• Perform other job-related duties as may be periodically assigned by the Supervisor.
• Maintain require certificates.

Requirements/Qualifications
