Personal Trainer – Job Description And Performance Expectations
The goal of our Personal Training department is to encourage, coach and educate our members on the many benefits of regular exercise. As a Personal Trainer, you are responsible for motivating and inspiring clients by setting goals, providing feedback and accountability, and creating enjoyable and effective fitness experiences. This is not a behind-the-scenes position – you are on the front line, letting your personality shine, connecting with members, offering complimentary advice, teaching classes, and helping clean and maintain fitness equipment. You have an incredible opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.
An NCAA accredited Personal Training Certification prior to employment is required. Candidates with a degree in a related field, such as Kinesiology or Exercise Science, will have three months from the date of hire to obtain a Personal Training Certification. Common accreditations include: NASM, ACE, ISSA, NCSF, ACSM, and NSCA.
Daily Operations
- Display a member-first attitude by creating raving fans and attracting and retaining members.
- Be visible and interact regularly with clients and members using smiles, names, and eye contact.
- Acknowledge all members, especially those in the fitness center.
- Offer assistance, correction, and advice when appropriate.
- Conduct daily walkthroughs of the fitness center to ensure safety.
- Attend Fitness meetings and WAC University sessions.
- Conduct personal training sessions according to WAC standards; confirm all appointments.
- Help clean and maintain all fitness equipment.
- Keep members informed of fitness center etiquette; strive to say yes whenever possible.
- Follow all responsibilities assigned by the Fitness Manager and General Manager.
- Maintain regular communication with team members and the Fitness Manager.
- Follow all Fitness department policies and procedures.
Team
- Recognize team members doing things right and reward with WAC Bucks.
- Participate in 90-day reviews and ongoing evaluations.
- Share innovative ideas and suggestions to improve the department.
- Work scheduled sessions or find replacements; inform the Fitness Manager of any changes.
- Pursue ongoing personal and professional development and share learnings.
- Follow all team policies and procedures.
- Be a team player—help wherever possible.
Safety
- Own and resolve pool problems immediately to ensure safety.
- Maintain CPR certification in good standing.
- Know the Safety Plan and Emergency Action Plan.
- Follow all insurance, liability, and incident report procedures.
- Regularly clean, sanitize, and organize all equipment.
- Report facility issues and broken equipment immediately.
Financial
- Communicate prices and session statuses ethically with clients.
- Accurately schedule sessions in the management system for correct payroll.
- Complete payroll by due dates.
Income Generation
- Encourage participation through promotions like the Buy 100, Get 20 event.
- Help exceed fitness goals individually and department-wide.
- Recommend additional services at point-of-sale.
Fitness
- Act as a liaison to promote the benefits of Personal Training across departments.
- Stay aware of all club programs, activities, and events.
- Participate in upcoming programs and events to increase knowledge.
- Use the Program Process for creating and evaluating fitness programs and events.
- Assist in fitness events like Super Saturday.
- Contribute articles to WAC Magazine for the Fitness section.
- Engage in community organizations and social media to promote the club.
New Member Integration & Retention
- Coordinate with member services for a smooth transition from sign-up to Fit Sessions.
- Welcome new participants and connect them to other programs.
- Use the 5-foot rule to engage members actively.
- Create memorable, enjoyable experiences on the fitness floor.
- Follow up regularly to ensure retention.
- Participate actively in retention programs.
