Personal Trainer – Job Description And Performance Expectations

The goal of our Personal Training department is to encourage, coach, and educate our members on the many benefits of regular exercise. As a Personal Trainer, you are responsible for motivating and inspiring clients by setting goals, providing feedback and accountability, and creating enjoyable and effective fitness experiences. This position involves active engagement with members, offering advice, teaching classes, and maintaining equipment. You have an opportunity to make a significant difference in people's lives.

Qualifications: An NCAA-accredited Personal Training Certification prior to employment is required. Candidates with a degree in related fields such as Kinesiology or Exercise Science have three months from hire to obtain a certification. Common certifications include NASM, ACE, ISSA, NCSF, ACSM, and NSCA.

1. Daily Operations
  • Display a member-first attitude, creating raving fans and contributing to member attraction and retention.
  • Be visible, approachable, and engage regularly with members using smiles, name recognition, and eye contact.
  • Assist members during workouts with advice and corrections when appropriate.
  • Conduct daily safety walkthroughs of the fitness center.
  • Attend all fitness-related meetings and training sessions.
  • Conduct personal training sessions according to WAC standards and confirm appointments.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of fitness equipment.
  • Promote fitness center etiquette and a positive environment.
  • Follow all responsibilities assigned by the Fitness Manager and General Manager.
  • Maintain open communication with team members and management.
  • Adhere to all department policies and procedures.
2. Team
  • Recognize and reward team members for good practices.
  • Participate in performance reviews and evaluations.
  • Share ideas for department improvement.
  • Coordinate schedules and communicate any changes.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development and share learnings.
  • Follow all team policies and procedures.
  • Be a supportive team player.
3. Safety
  • Ensure pool and facility safety issues are addressed immediately.
  • Maintain CPR certification in good standing.
  • Know and follow safety and emergency procedures.
  • Report facility issues promptly.
  • Regularly clean and sanitize equipment.
4. Financial
  • Communicate pricing and session details ethically.
  • Accurately record sessions in the management system.
  • Complete payroll documentation on time.
5. Income Generation
  • Promote special offers and events to clients.
  • Contribute to departmental and individual fitness goals.
  • Suggest additional services at the point of sale.
6. Fitness
  • Promote the benefits of personal training across departments.
  • Stay informed about club programs and events.
  • Participate in club activities and community outreach.
  • Assist in fitness events and contribute to club publications.
7. Member Retention
  • Coordinate with member services for smooth onboarding.
  • Welcome new members and connect them with programs and events.
  • Engage members regularly to foster retention.
  • Follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction and retention.
